Agave Blue
Hugh Prestwood
The blue agave is the plant they use
Jalisco is the place where they transfuse
The silver river that I tend to cruise most every night
That reposado eases the pain of
The time I waste regretting in vain love
My life has taken on a pale stain of agave blue
Amber sunset seeping into a border town
Toast my rosy future slowly sinking down
I can’t sober up – ‘til that fifth gets drunk
Til my red blood turns – agave blue
Bartender I intend to drink a lot
I want you pouring me the best you got
I want you making sure that every shot is the real thing
They say your s’posed to drink the good stuff neat
That using lime and Cointreau is a cheat
Ain’t it ironical that Margarita broke my heart
Early evening neon starts to flicker
Jukebox playing variations of “She’s Gone”
I can’t sober up – ‘til this bottle’s drunk
Til my red blood burns – agave blue
By the time that moon gets high I will not feel a thing
But the blue flame of serenity tequila brings
Til my red blood turns – agave blue
