Thoughts on “Fake News”
Maybe you don’t remember the press coverage of President Bush 43’s eight years, but I do, vividly. For every single day of those years, Bush – according to the mainstream media -- did absolutely nothing right. Nothing. There was a joke going around that went more or less like this: Bush gathers the press together and proceeds to walk on water. The next day, the headlines read: Bush Can’t Swim.
And, in case you didn’t notice, for Obama’s eight years – according to the mainstream media -- Obama did absolutely nothing wrong. Nothing.
And – here we go again. From day one of his election, everything Trump says or does has been described as being horribly wrong, according – of course – to the mainstream media. So -- a quote from Joseph Pulitzer:
“Our Republic and its press will rise or fall together. An able, disinterested, public spirited press with trained intelligence to know the right, and courage to do it can preserve the public virtue without which popular government is a sham and a mockery. A cynical mercenary demagogic press will produce in time a people as base as itself.”
Anyone thinking the mainstream media is “disinterested”, and who doesn’t recognize its “demagogic” reporting isn’t paying attention or -- does recognize its bias but -- like baseball fans whose team is being favored by a dishonest umpire – does not object because their team is benefiting from his lack of objectivity.
So:
If you believe Ferguson, Missouri’s Michael Brown was on his knees with his hands up saying “Don’t Shoot” when he was killed,
Or if you believe the police routinely murder innocent unarmed blacks,
Or if you believe it is the norm for Western women to be oppressed by men,
Or if you believe that 1-in-4 women in college is sexually assaulted,
Or if you believe there are only minimal behavioral differences between males and females, and that women are happier being “masculinized”,
Or if you believe a woman’s best chance for lifetime “fulfillment” lies in having a career rather than having children,
Or if you believe a man accused of sexual assault should be presumed guilty until proven innocent,
Or if you believe gender is “fluid”, and therefore people may “decide” what sex they are, and that therefore a biological male should be allowed to play on a female athletic team if he’s decided he’s female,
Or if you believe that heterosexual preference is a “social construct”,
Or if you believe that the “patriarchy” intentionally keeps women from pursuing careers in STEM fields,
Or if you believe that male sexism – rather than lifestyle and career choices -- is the sole cause of any male/female pay disparities,
Or if you believe that it is acceptable for students in our so-called elite colleges to shout down or bar speakers who hold opinions the students disagree with,
Or if you believe it is fair and just that businesses owned or run by people who oppose same-sex marriage should be ruined,
Or if you believe that there are no advantages to children being raised by married parents,
Or if you believe a parent spanking their child should be a matter of concern for law enforcement,
Or if you believe that having uncontrolled borders is beneficial to America,
Or if you believe immigrants coming from cultures holding values vastly different from America’s (no separation of church and state, women not being allowed to drive, homosexuality punishable by death, etc.) should not be expected to assimilate, and that importing millions of them won’t insure a great deal of trouble,
Or if you believe that people are better off -- have more freedom, wealth, opportunity -- in socialist or communist countries than in capitalist ones,
Or if you believe that quotas are called for in any profession not having the right “numbers”, because not having the right numbers indicates bias,
Or if you believe that there is nothing immoral about killing an unborn child that has been in the mother’s womb for five or more months,
Or if you believe the co-creating father of an unborn child should have no say in whether or not his child will be allowed to live,
Or if you believe a public school nurse has the right to take a pregnant student to have an abortion without having to notify – and get the permission of -- the parents of that child,
Or if you believe that people who believe in God are foolish; are societal negatives,
Or if you believe the first half of the First Amendment’s statement on religion that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” should be stretched so far as to forbid public schools from singing traditional Christmas carols, but that the second half -- "or prohibit the free exercise of" should be ignored,
Or if you believe the government has the right to tell you which doctors you may see and when you may see them,
Or if you believe that “diversity” only applies to skin color and not to thought,
Or if you believe that having more black, Iranian, Hispanic, Laplander, etc. students in the classroom makes for better trig, French lit or geology courses,
Or if you believe a female Hispanic judge will – by virtue her nature and experiences – reach better decisions than a white male judge,
Or if you believe that white racism -- via “microaggressions” and “white privilege” -- is the reason blacks do so poorly in school (black 12th-graders read, on average, at the level of white eighth-graders), and commit hugely disproportionate rates of crime,
Or if you believe that black public school students are no more disruptive in classes than whites,
Or if you believe that whites hating blacks is racism, but blacks hating whites is not,
Or if you believe that government-forced racial mixing -- a la school busing – is beneficial,
OR -- if you believe that the reason Donald Trump won the election was because Russia “hacked” it, rather than because a great many citizens vehemently disagree with true-believing advocates of the above opinions -- then you are either a victim of your own disregard for seeking out whole truth, or you are a victim of “fake news” propaganda as routinely disseminated by the mainstream media.
So – there’s this married couple I know, and they’re not getting along; actually, they’re having serious fights regularly. And I happen to be good friends with the husband, who – whenever we get together – constantly tells me how horrible and unreasonable his wife is behaving. Is the husband’s account an accurate portrayal of who’s at fault? Of course not. Only when I get to hear the wife’s version of events can I get at least some sense of the whole truth about their relationship. More to the point, it would be naïve for me to take the husband’s side of the story as gospel. The only thing I can be certain of is that he – now – can’t stand his wife.
Likewise, as I have been insisting for some years now, if a person is being informed solely by the mainstream media, they are in no position to accurately grasp what is and is not true. There are many ways the mainstream media puts its progressive thumbs on the scales that don’t involve lies. In particular, what stories the media chooses to emphasize or deemphasize, and what facts are included or omitted; these are their primary weapons. As I have often said, by a careful picking and choosing of the right facts, and without telling a single lie, nearly all of us could be "accurately" portrayed as saints -- or sinners.
