Course Description

Photography I -

(Course #746) - .50 credit

One nine week courseelectiveprerequisite: grade 10 + must own an appropriate digital cameragrade: 10, 11, 12Students will learn to create beautiful photos! This course is an introduction to digital photography. Students will learn to take well-composed photographs and post process them in Adobe Photoshop.

Homework

WEEKLY WEEKEND HOMEWORK:

This course requires students to

shoot photo assignments over each weekend within the course duration.

All photography will be completed:

After school hours
Outdoors (all weather conditions)
Travel- Students will be expected to explore creative and unique locations (local) for their photo shoots
Homework is ONLY accepted for credit (200 points) the day it is due see link

Homework Policy

PHOTOS ARE DUE ON MONDAY - 200 points

You will only earn points for homework photos the day they are due.

Photo shoot homework will usually consist of taking 25-30 (specific requirements) photos. On Mondays the students will upload the photos and turn in a contact sheet. I will access their work, and the contact sheet will be worth up to 200 points.

Example:

Contact sheet turned in on Monday = % out of 200 points

Contact sheet turned in on Tuesday-Friday= 0/200 points

(Only exception is if you have an excused absence on Monday or if the school week doesn't start on a Monday)

LATE PHOTOS = 0/200 (zero)

If the students forget their photos at home, or do not have the photos for any other reason, and they are in school the day they are due, they WILL NOT GET THE POINTS FOR THE HOMEWORK SECTION (200 points) of the photo-shoot.

Students should still bring in the photos from the photo-shoot as soon as possible. Each week, students will process some of the photos from the photo-shoot for an assignment grade. Processed photos are worth another 200 points. We will use the photos from the weekend during that week in class. If the students do not have the photos from the weekend, they will not have anything to work on in class.

Turn in photos every week, even if they are late. You do not receive the homework points (late), however you will gain points for the projects that will be completed in class.

CONSIDER THIS: if you do not have photos from 1 weekend, then you will not have a week's worth of work. A week without any photos to work on will hurt your entire grade, as 1/9th of your grade will be a ZERO.

WHAT DO I DO IF I DID NOT COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT:

You are responsible for taking notes and following along with the rest of the class.

OPTION 1: Use a photo pass

• You may only use 1 photo pass per term. Not ALL photo shoot assignments are eligible for a photo pass.

OPTION 2: Use photos to practice on & Take Notes

If you have already used a photo pass, or if the assignment is NOT eligible for a pass, you should borrow photos, or use your own prior photos to follow along in class (practice), and take notes. You MAY NOT turn these photos in for a grade, however you will know how to process your photos once you take them.

Once you take the photos for the project, you will need to come in during tutorial or lunch to process the photos to catch up with the rest of the class.

If you make up the missed work, and you turn in the projects, they will be graded for full credit.

TURNING IN A LATE ASSIGNMENT:

When you need to turn in an assignment that is late you need to follow this procedure:

1. Place the Files into the Teacher's Desk (digital teacher's desk) .

2. Highlight the digital file with a colored label (any color except RED).

3. Fill out a "LATE ASSIGNMENT" slip, and place it in the needs graded bin.

4. Tell Mrs. Hodas that you have turned in a late assignment.

Materials & Fees

REQUIRED CAMERA:

This course requires students to have a digital camera:

10.0 mega pixels,
3x optical (not digital) zoom or higher.

Please note: The camera must be an ACTUAL camera, other digital devices may NOT be used (such as a camera phone, tablet, or video camera)

REQUIRED LAB FEE:

Students will need to pay a $20 lab fee.

(Checks made payable to General McLane High School- Cash or Checks will be turned into the main office).
The office will give the students a shop card to return to Mrs. Hodas, and will receive a receipt.

Weekly Assignment Schedule:

Each week the students will be given a prescribed number of photos to take over the weekend. Please refer to the calendar for details. Also, All of the assignment information including requirements for the photoshoot are listed on this website's front page:

Photoshoot information

Students should NOT work ahead, the photoshoot over the weekend will directly correspond with the week's lesson. Metadata will be checked to make sure the assignment was shot during the correct dates.

PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIO

Students are required to submit all work to a published SCHOOLOGY portfolio. This portfolio should be maintained throughout the course. It will be graded at the end of the term based on:

Completion
Growth in the course (skill)

PRINTS

• YOU WILL GET TO KEEP ALL PRINTS

ALL photos submitted for printing will be printed on photo print paper.

Mrs. Hodas will KEEP the photos until the END of the school year so that they may be considered for display in our annual art show.

The art show will be held during the last full week of school

After the art show, students will be asked to PICK up the prints from room 104 (the photo studio)

Any photo that is not picked up by the LAST TEACHER day of school, will be repurposed or discarded.

• PHOTOS WILL BE RETURNED AFTER THE ART SHOW

The art show for the 2015-16 school year will be on:

WHEN: TBA the choral concert will begin at 8:00.

WHERE: General McLane High School Grand Lobby

Students will be able to pick up Art Show Pieces after 2nd period (10:55) the day after the art show.
