Alphabet Photography

1. A-Z REQUIRED= 26 letters

Find letters A-Z, however they cannot be actual LETTERS, they must be objects that create the letter when photographed from a unique perspective.

No ACTUAL letters should be used (DO NOT USE LETTERS FROM from signs, written in the sand, on paper).

Also AVOID trees and sticks (no X made by sticks or Y from the tree trunk).

Look at the photo below, you may be able to see a Y, or a V, maybe a F, however, when we look at it... we pretty much always interpret this as a TREE. So avoid this.

Think about keeping a checklist with you! Write out A-Z on a page and cross out the letters as you get them.

2. OPTIONAL THEME

OPTIONAL: Develop a THEME such as a place, style, "thing":

SUCH AS:

    • VEHICLE
    • BEACH
    • LANDSCAPE
    • CITY
    • TECHNOLOGY
    • SCHOOL
    • BAND
    • SPORT
    • PLAYGROUND
    • ARCHITECTURE
    • MUSIC

3. TECHNICAL: CAMERA SET UP

  1. Outside/ Daylight hours- no flash
  2. Photos must be vertical (portrait) orientation
  3. Use Macro Mode or Portrait Mode (aperture: large opening, small f-number)
  4. Zoom in (to blur background)
  5. Look for CONTRAST* (light letter, dark background, or vise-versa)
  6. Sharp focus of letter!
  7. TIGHTLY framed letter- ELIMINATE ALL BACKGROUND!!!!
  8. Object should have aesthetics! Would you want to frame this photo? For example, a garbage can's lid may look like an O, one ever would you want to frame it?
  9. The letter should have DRASTIC contrast from the background

*We have discussed CONTRAST in class, however this needs to be VALUE contrast, as all of the letters will be turned to grayscale. So think about this. An orange letter next to a blue background may normally contrast in COLOR, however if turned to black and white, it may not contrast.
