All STUDENTS THAT ARE ENROLLED IN THE PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE NEEDS TO PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING:
(as stated in the student course booklet)

• 3x OPTICAL (not digital) zoom or more
Must be an actual CAMERA not a phone, or another electronic device that takes pictures
DIGITAL CAMERA SPECS:
QUESTION: Is there a recommended Camera for the class?
ANSWER: No. Only because so many camera brands are very comparable. I do feel that there are features that will be better than others. The higher the megapixel = the better. The higher the OPTICAL zoom = the better. Nice features are cameras that can be set to manual mode. ALSO a viewfinder along with an LCD screen is nice. Most photo sessions will be outside, and LCD screens can be hard to see when you are out in the bright sun.
QUESTION: what is better, the point and shoot or the DSLR?
ANSWER: The DSLR will give more professional results, however a point and shoot camera will suffice for the class. Students who plan to pursue photography, may want to invest in a DSLR camera. A good starter DSLR is the Nikon 5100, Nikon D90, or Canon Rebel
Top Brands: Nikon, Canon, Olympus
Next in Line: Casio, Kodak, Sony
QUESTION: may I use my phone or tablet to take pictures?
ANSWER: NO, you MUST have an actual camera, with an optical zoom lens, or DSLR
• This is paid to Mrs. Stawicki in the office. Ask for a "shop" card for Photography class
• This cost helps defray the in-house photo printing that we do, and other costs associated with the materials needed for the class
• The lab fee helps defray the cost to operate the course for supplies such as:
Photo Paper
•We use only EPSON brand, as our printer is calibrated/formulated to work with this type of paper
• Size: 8.5"x11
• Type: Glossy
• Rating: 4-5 star
• Major Projects will be printed*
*students will receive all projects back at the end of the year AFTER the art show in June
•Our professional Epson Photo printer uses 8 large cartridges
•Our professional Color Laser Toner uses 4 large cartirges
• Memory card that will be used just for this class
• I recommend at least a 2GB MEMORY card. Sandisk is a good brand
• Some camera manuals will recommend a certain brand of memory card, I highly recommend purchasing THAT brand to better protect your card
• I HIGHLY recommend purchasing a memory card pouch or case. You can ruin your camera if your card gets dirty or damaged
• Students do not need to bring this into class, however they need to have access to the manual in order to operate some of the features/functions of their personal camera. If you do not have a manual, download a digital copy from online. It DOES not have to be PRINTED... students will just have to refer to it at home!
• Students will NOT need to bring the cameras in everyday, however every week they will need to bring their photos into class. It is HIGHLY recommended that the students bring their memory cards into school inside of a case (this can even be a zip-lock bag). If dirt or lint get on the memory card, it will be ruined.
• NOTE: Students that have SD cards can use the slot on the computer
• The classroom has two card readers for students to share
• Students will need a way to get the photos from their camera to the computer. Students DO NOT need to bring the camera to school each week if they have a memory card and card reader. If you are not going to be bringing the camera to school I suggest getting a card holder wallet to protect the memory card. IF the students are bringing the camera to school, they may keep the cameras in the studio. I do not recommend storing the camera in a locker.
Photography ASSIGNMENTS:
When the course begins, a class calendar will be posted so that students & parents will know when the cameras will be needed at school.
This is a 9 week course. Students taking the graphic design class will need the camera a various times throughout the 9 week course. For the duration of this course students will have to capture photos that will be used in class as graphic design assignments.
Some of the photo work will need to be done at home & some of the photo work will be done in the class studio.
I am looking forward to this class. Students have been very successful and seem to love the course! I love teaching it!
