Agenda details

11/15: 4th hour. Mentorship content: Critical Thinking

Each RtI group will get two sheets.

Below, you’ll see a theory. Your half of the RtI group has a job: find evidence to prove that your theory is

TRUE FALSE

Send your best link to your mentor.

“The Illuminati control the world”

“The Moon Landings were faked”

“9/11 was an inside job”

“The CIA created AIDS"

"Osama Bin Laden is alive and well"

“The Annunaki control the world."

“The Holocaust is a hoax.”

“Sandy Hook (in Newtown CT) never happened.”

“The earth is flat.”

Split up your advisory, giving a sheet to each half, and give them ten minutes to get you their best site.

Project each site, and have someone from that group make the case.

Lead the discussion.

So, is the theory true? What convinced you, either way?

It's true, or it's false. One of these websites is simply wrong. How do you tell whether a website is reliable?

The one that's wrong... what would possess people to put so much effort into spreading a lie like that?

How do you sort out what's true from what's just not?

Bring your group back to the internet cafe at 11:12.

11/9: 3rd hour. Speaker

Astronauts live here!

11/2: 2nd hour. Class meetings

Agenda per class.

10/25: 1st hour. Mentoring on end of quarter, ICAP continued.

7:50 Circle-up: how is the pressure of the end of the quarter affecting folks? How does one prioritize and systematize schoolwork? Reminder for all that it's a progress report now.

8:05 Study hall: get work done, confer with teachers at need.

8:25 ICAP... make sure everyone is done, at least, with academic plan.

10/18: 8th hour. Announcements, academic check-in, ICAP continued.

We'll gather briefly in the internet cafe to announce the revised bell schedule.

Then we'll head to mentors, where we'll circle-up, and have a brief check-in on academic progress. End of quarter approaches. How's everyone doing? Any teachers they need to touch base with?

Last twenty minutes, we'll pick up the ICAP. I think most kids still need to finish their plans, right?

10/11: 7th hour. Assembly/Mentoring content: CREATE

On Tuesday, 7th hour, we'll have the first of six themed assemblies on the "C's". All will gather in the internet cafe, I'll give a brief talk about creativity, and then Cappi will lead an activity that (we think) will be awesome, helping them make their mark on the school renovation.

I hope to get students thinking more broadly about creativity--not as arts and crafts merely--as that essential human capacity to make our world a better one to live in, to participate in that original way that lies in each of us. I'll bring up the transcendentalists that three quarters of them have read with me.

So we might think about the life we create for ourselves, the ways we face seemingly intractable problems, navigate difficult situations... We bring our creativity to bear in each day's lesson planning, each moment of relationships. Perhaps we are having conversations with kids about that while they're making their mark.

Please don't prepare the kids for the following activity. It'll be more fun if it comes as a surprise, don't you think?

Cappi is arranging the paints, drop cloths, etc. to facilitate kids decorating the internet cafe with their hand-prints and signatures. Scott's on board with this plan, yes. The place needs the students' ownership, and color. We'll all pitch in to ensure that the process is relatively orderly, fun, positive, and linked to the "C" we're discussing...

I have no idea how long it'll take to do the project and clean up. If we have time, we'll head back to our mentoring rooms, continue the conversation, give opportunity for individual school work and teacher support.

10/4: 6th hour. Mentoring conversation: create personal honor pledge, then kick off ICAP.

12:56 Circle-up. Introduce academic honesty conversation in any way that works for you. (Melania Trump, perhaps? Various academic hypotheticals?) Recall Kohlberg discussion from last week. Brainstorm onto the board various possible simple honor pledges. Collect a signed written commitment from each student.

1:15 ICAP launch. Email from Cappi with directions to follow.

9/27: 5th hour. Mentoring conversation: Introduce morality discussion towards creating pledges next week. Class meetings on Homecoming.

11:26 Introduce Kohlberg's stages of moral development by administering and discussing this quiz. Stop by my room to grab enough copies of the quiz for each of your advisees. You'll want to read this link for background.

11:40 Academic support (if there's time)

11:50 Class meetings (see Ashley's email).

9/20: 4th hour. Mentoring conversation: What's school for? Class meetings on homecoming.

10:32 Circle up, conversation on purpose.

Circle-up prompt: Name one thing you care passionately about, and explain why.

Read Making Modern Toughness by David Brooks, and use it to frame a conversation on what we're doing here.

10:50 Time for academic support

11:05 Class meetings: Homecoming planning

9/13: 3rd hour. Welcome back, new advisory structure, class meetings for Stuco.

9:38 Welcome back assembly: Student Lounge. Rock Paper Scissors tournament.

9:50 Advisory in classroom: Circle up, process the hike, set agenda for year: Climb The Peak

Remind students how Tuesdays will work. We'll kick ICAP off in a couple of weeks, through Google Classroom.

Circle up to establish that protocol. Prompt for circle-up: Describe one moment from CTP day that you remember vividly.

Then lead a discussion getting them to reflect on how CTP applies in their school life this year...

10:05 Class Meetings for STUCO elections.

Dear Students,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 academic year! We look forward to seeing you at 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6. To kick off our return, we (the high school teachers) thought it would be fun to start our school year differently.

As many of you know, we are entering year two of our "Climb The Peak" vision for Ouray School District. Climb The Peak is an acronym that stands for Courage, Tenacity, and Purpose. But it's hard to have "Climb The Peak" as a guiding vision when, well, not all of us have climbed a peak!

So on Tuesday, September 6, Ouray High School will remedy this problem by having students and teachers hike together and Climb Twin Peaks.

Please come to school that day prepared to be outside and active. Ensure you bring:

  • Sturdy hiking shoes
  • Activewear for the hike
  • A daypack
  • At least two layers - one warm layer, one waterproof layer
  • Sunscreen
  • Water Bottle
  • Snacks
  • A notebook and pen or pencil

The school will provide lunch. Please contact Food Services Director Shannon Williams no later than Thursday, September 1, if you have dietary restrictions. She can be reached at swilliams@ouray.k12.co.us.

We will summit via Oak Creek Trailhead, which starts in town. The hike is six miles round trip, and requires climbing 2,900 feet. Summiting and returning will take all of the school day. In the case of inclement weather, we will proceed with a regularly-scheduled school day and reschedule Climb Twin Peaks Day within the first two weeks of school.

If you are physically unable to participate in this activity, please email me or call Kim or Paige in the school office ASAP so we can make other accommodations for you. The phone number is (970) 325-4505.

Thanks, and looking forward to seeing you next week!

Best,

Taylor Chase
