Final Research Project

Watch a movie that give you insight into a foreign country, and read at least 50 pages of literature from that country.

(Here's a list of great foreign films). What can you find? That'll help you decide what country you'll be looking at.

Create a website that shows us something about that country... your website should have these topics in mind.

The final project is to compose a 4-6 page paper discussing the nation’s culture, as seen through its literature.

Your guiding question while reading and watching should be, “What do I learn about my country’s culture, values, habits, and beliefs?” While reading be sure you take notes of lines/passages which illustrate these things.

Notice elements of culture: what viewpoints, ideas, values, beliefs, and attitudes do you learn from the culture? Look with a discerning, perceptive, intuitive eye.

Your final essay should somehow answer two questions:

a. What are the values, the unique cultural aspects, of your nation?

b. Why should people care? Why should we know about your nation’s values, beliefs, and culture? What can we learn from your nation's culture?

Consider what you have learned regarding family structure, interpersonal relationships, religion, art, music, food, history, traditions, holidays, etc. These elements should help you as you compose and revise, compose and revise.

Your final essay should be at least four pages long (not including the works cited page). Yes, it should begin with an effective introduction and end with a true conclusion, but allow the body to develop organically. Given what you’ve read and learned, how should the contents flow, one idea to the next?

PRESENTATION OF FINDINGS:

Convert your paper to slides, one slide per paragraph.

Here's the catch: No more than 5 words per slide.

Convey the ideas with imagery, and be ready to talk us through the argument.

Present your findings to the class. You MAY NOT read your paper to us. Just tell us the point of each slide.
