In the 1960s a great many changes took place in Hollywood. The cinemas lost more and more of their audiences to television. And as we have seen, the cinemas built wide screens and used stereophonic sound to fight television.
For a time these developments were a help to the film industry, but not for long. Many people had gone regularly to see films and they did not mind whether the film they saw was good or bad. They had gone to the cinema to be entertained. Sometimes they were entertained well; sometimes not very well. Now these people could stay at home and be entertained by television.
By the late 1950s Hollywood had a very large number of old films and very few of them were ever shown. Television, particularly in America, needed a lot of programmes to fill up the hours that it was on. The television companies tried to buy old films from Hollywood. At first Hollywood refused. Film companies believed that if people could see films on television, they would never go to the cinema again.

It wasearly morning on August 6th, 1945 in the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Tens ofthousands of people were on their way to work, travelling on trams and busesand walking through the crowded streets. Thousands more were already at work. The war had finished in Europe in May, but it was not yet over in the Pacific. However, Hiroshima was strangely quiet and untouched by war. American planeshad flown over the city many times in the past few months, but had not droppedtheir bombs. The people of the city found it difficult to believe their luck.Hiroshima was an industrial city with an important naval base and they couldnot understand why the Americans had not bombed it like nearly every other cityin Japan. They were tense and afraid. Every day they expected the Americanplanes to come.
Thatmorning at 8.15 a man was sitting on the marble steps of a large bank in thecity's financial area. Perhaps he had sat down on the steps to wait for thebank to open. 141. READING &COMPREHENSION. Read the text below about howliquor companies advertise their products.
Death by advertising
In many countries, young people have a more active social life thanany other group in society. This means that they spend a lot of time in pubs, bars, discotheques and clubs. Therefore, young people are a natural target foradvertisers, especially the advertisers who work for liquor companies.Promotions and advertising campaigns aim at introducing young people todifferent brands of liquor. The idea is to attract as many young people aspossible into a club or a bar. In this way, they create a new generation ofdrinkers, who will go on drinking for the rest of their lives. Companiesadvertise drinks at cheaper prices together with free T-shirts, caps andposters in order to encourage teenagers to try new "tastes" in hard liquor. One vodka company actually held a competition at a university. The prize wasfree vodka for a whole term.
Health experts have strongly critisised this form of advertising. Theyargue that young people are unaware of the dangers of alcohol. The main danger, they say, is the serious risk to life when young people drink large amounts ofliquor and then try to drive home. Drunken driving involving teenagers is aserious problem in many European countries, where drinking in bars is becomingmore popular among teenagers. Drunken driving often leads to injury and deathbecause young people are unaware of how drinking affects their judgement andreaction time. An unfortunate example of the effects of alcohol is the case ofa young girl who collapsed in her home after drinking 17 tequilas at a liquorpromotion. Later, when she was leaning out of her window to get some fresh air,she fell to her death.
Experts on alcoholism believe that the only way to prevent thisdisturbing trend is to teach teenagers the facts about the effects of alcoholon the body and to make them aware of the risks they take when they drink anddrive.
Perhaps they should also show teenagers how they are manipulated byadvertisers who are not concerned about the consequences, but only about makinga profit.

WHY HAS POP MUSIC LOST ITS POWER TO SHOCK ?
In the early 1950s, before pop music, most young people behaved like their parents. They wore the same clothes and listened to the same music. But in the mid-1950s, Elvis Presley changed all that. Young people for the first time dared to be different. They wore different clothes and listened to different music and they had their own youth culture, which was a reaction against the culture of their parents.
Indeed, parents, teachers and other figures of authority disapproved strongly of this subversive, new culture and the music that the younger generation listened to. It may seem strange to us today, but in the 1950s, Elvis Presley was asked not to do his hip-shaking dance on television as it was considered 'too sexy'. And in the 1960s, BBC Radio 1, Britain's most popular music station, banned songs that mentioned sex or drugs. Parents all over the world worried about the effects that pop songs would have on their children.
But this situation has changed. Nowadays, people have become used to the subversive behaviour of pop bands. In fact, they are surprised if bands are not loud and rude. Society has caught up with the pop stars. The stars have become, in their own way, conventional, or normal, and pop music seems to have lost its ability to shock.
Nowadays, the only records that aren't played by Radio 1 are those which disc jockeys think are too old-fashioned and boring. The times have really changed!
Glossary.- subversive: reacting against the dominant culture.
caught up with: arrived at the same point as.
conventional: the same as the dominant culture.

I’ve got a friend called Brad. He’s seventeen and he lives in Boston. Actually he’s from Canada, but he’s lived in the USA for ten years. Last month he came to stay with me and my family in Wales.
We had a really great time. We went to the mountain in the north of Wales. We stayed near a lake and went canoeing and swimming every day. He also liked going to the cinema – especially to see science-fiction films. While he was staying with me, we saw four science-fiction films! And we had a fancy dress party the night before he went home. People wore anything from Star Wars!
I haven’t been to the USA yet. But next year, I’m going to stay with Brad in Boston. If I save enough money, I’ll stay for two months! We’ll probably travel to some different places with his family. I think we’ll go to New York and if there’s enough time, we’ll go to the beach in Florida!

"Death will come to those who disturb the peace of Pharaohs..." These were the words found inscribed in the tomb of the Egyptian boy King Tutankhamun at Luxor, when it was opened in February, 1923 - for the first time in 3,000 thousand years.
The man who led the expedition to Egypt to excavate Tutankhamun's tomb was an Englishman, 57 year old Lord Carnarvon. And the Curse of Pharaohs was well known to him. He knew what had happened to the man who, in the late 19th century, had brought another Pharaoh's coffin back to England. Arthur Weigall, one of the men in Carnavon's expedition, had told Carnarvon all about the owner of the coffin. "No sooner had he obtained the coffin than he lost his gun when his gun exploded. The ship in which the coffin was sent home was wrecked. The house in which it was kept was burnt down. The photographer who took a picture of it shot himself. A lady friend of whom the owner was very fond was lost at sea." The list of tragedies was of enormous length.

203. READING & COMPREHENSION. Read the text below about how liquor companies advertise their products.
Death by advertising
In many countries, young people have a more active social life than any other group in society. This means that they spend a lot of time in pubs, bars, discotheques and clubs. Therefore, young people are a natural target for advertisers, especially the advertisers who work for liquor companies. Promotions and advertising campaigns aim at introducing young people to different brands of liquor. The idea is to attract as many young people as possible into a club or a bar. In this way, they create a new generation of drinkers, who will go on drinking for the rest of their lives. Companies advertise drinks at cheaper prices together with free T-shirts, caps and posters in order to encourage teenagers to try new "tastes" in hard liquor. One vodka company actually held a competition at a university. The prize was free vodka for a whole term.
Health experts have strongly criticized this form of advertising. They argue that young people are unaware of the dangers of alcohol. The main danger, they say, is the serious risk to life when young people drink large amounts of liquor and then try to drive home. Drunken driving involving teenagers is a serious problem in many European countries, where drinking in bars is becoming more popular among teenagers. Drunken driving often leads to injury and death because young people are unaware of how drinking affects their judgement and reaction time. An unfortunate example of the effects of alcohol is the case of a young girl who collapsed in her home after drinking 17 tequilas at a liquor promotion. Later, when she was leaning out of her window to get some fresh air, she fell to her death.
Experts on alcoholism believe that the only way to prevent this disturbing trend is to teach teenagers the facts about the effects of alcohol on the body and to make them aware of the risks they take when they drink and drive.
Perhaps they should also show teenagers how they are manipulated by advertisers who are not concerned about the consequences, but only about making a profit.
