On Multiliteracies

The concept of multiliteracies (New London Group, 1996, quoted in Warschauer, 2000) has been proposed in response to globalization. This concept suggests that students should learn to “ negotiate a multiplicity of media and discourses (Ibid.).” The critical elements of such concept are:

-          Immersion in situation practice i.e. students need to practice in authentic communicative situations

-          Overt instruction i.e. students need to step back under teachers’ guidance to critically analyze the content, coherence, organization, pragmatics, syntax, and lexis of communication.

-          Critical framing i.e. students need to have a high degree of critical interpretation

-          Transformed practice i.e. students need to transfer what they have learnt to new situations
