White Lady ship's figurehead at Thistleboon

A question from our Facebook page A HISTORY OF MUMBLES >

Susan Rowlands, asked:-

'I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about the ‘White Lady’ figurehead which used to be in the garden of my grandmothers cottage  at the top of Thistleboon?  I just wish that we took the time when our grandparents were alive to talk about the past and made notes'

It is recorded that the 'White Lady' statue which stood in the garden of Lewin's Hill House, Thistleboon was a figurehead from a schooner, which had been wrecked at Southend in 1885. Beforehand, the same figurehead had been in Mr. Bader's house in West Cross.

Above, a photo of the White Lady from Angela Windsor, taken by her uncle Dr Trevor Harris in 1965.

The late Mumbles Councillor John Harris, his sister and two brothers and his mother (the grandmother of Mr. Bill Harris of Norton Road, who lent the picture) at the famous White Lady Cottage, Lewins Hill, Thistleboon. Pictured about 1900, the 'White Lady' statue, which stood in the garden, was a figurehead from a schooner wrecked at Southend in 1885.
