1944 Sweethearts Tree Carving
One of our readers was walking in Mill Wood, Sketty and discovered a poignant tree carving, dated 7th July 1944, where a GI has inscribed a heart/arrow to his sweetheart.
He contributed this photograph.

To the best of my deciphering, it reads as follows
(in a rectangular box outlined by carved dots) ...
OHiE WLA
'OHiE' might be Ollie (possibly for Olwen or Olive
and WLA for Women's Land Army)
LEE. U.SA.
arrow/heart and below ...
JULY. 7.tH.
1944

'Found this carving on an old Beech tree, on a secluded path at Parc Le Breos. I think it reads JS ES.c 1938 p USA 1944.
I presume it was carved by an American Airman or Soldier stationed here during the war.
