'Jean The Wool' at Gower Place

Jean was known to her customers and friends as, 'Jean The Wool' and ran her business, situated at the corner of Gower Place and Dunns Lane, between 1980 and 1999, when the building was divided into two. One half became the Acupuncture Centre and the other Cocoa, the Chocolate Shop.

There are many memories to be told concerning 'Jean The Wool:

' One local knitter remarked, 'Jean knew where every item of her stock was placed and when asked for a particular colour or ply, she would rummage through a pile of wool and return triumphant, with the correct item.

Jean (née Adams) and her husband Brian, outside the Wool Shop, in the 1990s.

There was snow on the ground, when these photos were taken, kindly shared by her son Julian, who said, in 2021: 'My Mum was a larger than life character, who we sadly lost far too young in 2004. My dad, Brian, is still going strong at 84.'

Two ladies worked with Jean in the shop - Diane Hardy and Margaret Pickard, known as 'Marg.'

They were reinforced by Brian's Mum, who used to work Saturday afternoons well into her nineties. She lived to 99 years old and died in 2008.
