Picture this: You walk into class and you have a pop quiz! You don’t really know the material so you get stressed and you immediately pull out your fidgets. Whether it’s putty or a squishy, it just might be the reason why you don’t know the material. In our school system, state, and all over the country, fidgets are becoming a huge problem. So it leads us to ask ourselves: Should we ban fidgets?

Many people bring fidgets to school and they have become a huge distraction to both students and staff around the nation. Squishies and fidgets are now starting to be thrown around classrooms becoming toys and not stress relievers. It is very likely for these toys to be thrown because they are sharing with their friends or they are just trying to cause chaos. They will break easily when thrown around as well which leaves the teacher cleaning up the mess which also distracts everyone from the learning that they could be doing. They also are coming to school in very large amounts that can distract not just the student that brought them but everyone around them because they could do trading and not listening to the lesson that is provided. In a recent study, researchers found that college students who played with fidget spinners during lectures memorization of the lesson dropped 44% and the people around them dropped by 13%.
Another con of bringing squishies or fidgets to school is that they can make a big mess and could be toxic to people. Needoh products and many other popular fidgets have a negative effect on people if they come in contact with skin, eyes, or mouth. Some can have effects for a few weeks like a chemical burn but others may have infections. There are also dangers of owning these squishies and toys. There are some dangerous trends online of people microwaving their Needohs to make them softer. Many people were left with 2nd degree burns and 3rd degree burns because of the explosions that happen. Schools have already started banning Needohs from their environment because of this.

Many people believe that these reasons support the movement of banning fidgets. Stephanie Ayer states that, “Sometimes in my class they explode and make a big distracting mess, some people throw them around and make them distracting, sometimes people have so many that you can’t even find their chromebook on tier desk amidst the toys.” This shows how squishies and many other fidgets have been a distraction in our own school district.
In conclusion, schools should ban fidgets all over the nation. Not only is it a distraction to students learning but it is also a violation of health and safety toward other kids. So now which is better? Your health and safety or your trendy ways.
