What a surprise, a very popular and classic 2000s movie got a sequel. Who could’ve guessed it? Yes, you heard it right, on May 1st the Devil Wears Prada 2 was released in theaters, to albeit mixed but surprisingly more positive reviews. Considering the track record for more recent sequels, it’s a pretty decent one. An article from the Hollywood Reporter says “Arriving 20 years after the original, David Frankel’s sequel hits familiar beats that fans will eat up”

One issue most sequel movies have is that some of the actors from the original movie don’t want to come back. This movie has a bit of that, like for the character Nate, his actor Adrien Grenier decided to not come back for whatever reason. But the main four actors (Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Meryl Streep) fortunately decided to come back and reprise their roles. They dodged that bullet but unfortunately they didn’t dodge the pacing bullet. Many people have been saying that some plot points aren’t fleshed out enough and some take too much time, making it both seem too short and too long. It also makes the plot hard to follow and a bit fuzzy at times. An article from the Jerusalem Post says “at times I was disappointed that the sequel softened some of the wit and hard truths that gave the first movie its edge. “ Which is another issue people had with the film, that it lost the bite that made the original movie more memorable. These are all valid complaints and some I even noticed when I watched it, but there are still a lot of good things to say about the movie too.
Some people (like myself) enjoyed most of the movie, a review on Rotten Tomatoes says “Fans may not find it the superior film in terms of tight storytelling, but it is a deeply enjoyable, worthy follow-up.” Most people found that white not as good as the original, it is still an altogether decent sequel. Another thing people liked was the many call backs to the original movie, with some gags and jokes brought back for this film. In a reveiw on Rotten Tomatoes says “Fans may not find it the superior film in terms of tight storytelling, but it is a deeply enjoyable, worthy follow-up.” Most people found that white not as good as the original, it is still an altogether decent sequel.

The cover of the first book
Like most good movies, the Devil Wears Prada is based on a book by the same name, written by Lauran Weisberger (she also helped write both movies). The first book (there are three in the series) was released on April 15th of 2003 and is based on Weisberger’s time working for Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Which could’ve caused a huge blow up considering she was one of the biggest names in fashion, so much so that many brands didn’t want to work with the movie in fear of repercussions from her. Although the second movie goes off script and changes the story from the second book, it’s safe to say that if they ever make a Devil Wears Prada 3 it will not be the same story as the book.
Is this objectively a good movie? Heck no, but was it a fun time to watch? Yes. Sometimes I think people forget that movies are meant to just be fun, doesn’t mean that it’s the most amazing movie you’ve ever seen. But sometimes you just want a fun and enjoyable experience watching a movie about fashion. In my opinion the stuff that we got was pretty decent, some of it was a bit corny but that’s a small price to pay for an actually decent sequel. Whether you love it or hate it, it seems the Devil Wears Prada 2 is here to stay and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
