Fernando Mendoza

Heismendoza! Heismendoza! Fernando Mendoza is Indiana University's star quarterback and secret weapon for the Hoosiers. He has made 41 touchdowns this season and has played key roles throughout conferences and bowl games. And one thing that has stayed true is his “Never daunting” values he carries with him.

Mendoza’s values are clear: his family, faith, and football. His family clearly plays a key role in his life. Mendoza’s mom, Elsa Mendoza, is currently fighting MS (Multiple Sclerosis), an autoimmune disease that attacks the body's immune system, causing fatigue and balance issues. Mendoza has supported her through all of this, while balancing his college football lifestyle. His dad is also extremely supportive of both his wife and son. It has been shown that to demonstrate his selflessness to his wife, while fans stand up and shout to show their support, he remains seated next to her. Mendoza’s mom sits in a wheelchair, and together they show their support in their own way. Alberto, the brother of Mendoza, is also seen hanging out with his brother, Fernando. Together, they share a special bond that only grows stronger through the game of football. Another one of Mendoza’s family qualities is that they are all tied together through faith. Mendoza is Catholic and shows his faith through everything he does, including football. Mendoza also has strong Cuban roots. His grandparents, Alberto and Alicia Espenoza immigrated from Cuba to Miami, establishing the family's deep Cuban roots that helped shape his overall identity and football career. He includes his Cuban heritage in his life and supports the Latino community through football.

When he was little, Mendoza made the decision to start playing football. But his career really started to pick up speed when he was in high school. Mendoza went to Christopher Columbus High School, an all-boys Catholic school in Miami, Florida. He started out as a backup quarterback, stepping in to go 3-0. He later became the starting quarterback for his team in his junior and senior years, and led them to a 21-4 record and national recognition. Mendoza led his high school team from down in the depths to a new level, which created new records.

Mendoza’s career has been nothing short of awesome, but his time on the field did end for a short period. Despite his outstanding high school career and subsequent greatness, he didn’t receive any offers from schools to play. This quarterback didn’t waste his intelligence, though and left his hometown of Miami, FL, to get his business degree at UC Berkeley, otherwise known as Cal. Cal is where Mendoza got his business degree and graduated early, only attending college for 2 years. Before the next season at Cal, Mendoza won the starting quarterback position, which led to his success. He transferred to IU as a graduate junior and remained as their starting quarterback for the whole season. He has led IU to a historic season and countless victories. Not only did he lead us to an undefeated conference season, but he also led them to the Big 10 championship, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, GA, and finally their last game in his hometown, the National championship in Miami, FL. Not only has he played a phenomenal season, but he also won the Heisman, which is a very prestigious award to win as a college Offensive player. While his time in college has been bright, his future appears to be even brighter.

Mendoza, although he’s a graduated junior and has 2 years of eligibility left, has this remaining amount of time, and NFL scouts have noticed just how talented the quarterback is. All eyes are on Mendoza, and stadium lights in many places, like New York, Las Vegas, and Arizona, are calling his name. Although he has years of eligibility left, Mendoza will most likely enter the NFL draft and head to another location in the US to continue his passion.

Although his presence on the field will be missed dearly, IU fans are prepared to follow their star wherever he may go. He has not only produced pride in his fans, coaches, and family, but he has also brought an energy Hoosiers didn’t know they needed.
