Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world, but EJHS doesn’t have a soccer team. So, why doesn’t our school have one? Lots of students want to play, but there is no team for us yet. In this article, what might happen in the future?
Many schools in Indiana – and across the U.S. have soccer teams, but EJHS doesn’t – and that's something several students at EJHS have noticed. Soccer is a fun and popular sport that lots of kids want to play, but for some reason, our school hasn’t started a team yet. In this article, I’ll also explore why EJHS is missing a soccer team, looking at things like available space and student interest. I’ll also talk about what students and teachers think about possibly having a team in the future, and what issues could happen if there were a soccer team.

One reason why Edgewood Junior High School does not offer a soccer team is that its athletic program is structured to funnel students into sports offered at Edgewood High School, which does have both boys' and girls' varsity soccer teams. EJHS students interested in soccer typically join a non-school club or team to prepare for playing at the high school level or for entertainment and/or exercise, but many students would be interested in playing if there was a school team, for instance, Kendall Quackenbush states “I would be interested in soccer for EJHS, as long as it wouldn’t intervene with track or cheer, but I think that it would be a good idea and it would be pretty successful.”
Another reason may be that there is limited land and practice space. Soccer requires large fields, which might not be ready and available on school grounds, especially if the school has a limited land area. Athletic Director and Vice Principal, Mr. Siegelin, says, “We would run into is field space - especially in the fall. Both boys' and girls' soccer take place in the fall for high school, so practice and game space is limited.”

Another reason why EJHS might not have a soccer team is because of coaching availability. Mr. Siegelin states, “I have not had any teachers reach out about coaching soccer, but it might be a possibility. There have been discussions in the past about the possibility of starting junior high soccer. There are several obstacles that we would need to overcome, but there is a chance.”
In conclusion, EJHS doesn’t have a soccer team for a few reasons, like not having enough money, staff, or time and space to add another sport. While some students might want a team, the school has to make the choices based on what is possible right now. Maybe in the future, if things change, a soccer team could be added. For now, students who enjoy soccer can still play outside of school or in local leagues.
