As the school year comes to an end, it’s time for students at EJHS to participate in I-LEARN. I-LEARN is a state-wide testing program in Indiana that allows students to take diagnostic tests, providing valuable feedback about the school to the state. This article provides an overview of the I-LEARN testing process at EJHS.
A week before I-LEARN began, the student council developed an idea to make the testing experience a bit more enjoyable. They proposed that each homeroom decorate its classroom door with a food theme connected to I-LEARN. Miya, a student council member, says, "We decided that this year we would do the door decorating contest again. This year, more homerooms participated than last year." This initiative was a fun way to help students think positively about testing.
The start of the testing period was a bit chaotic, but once everyone settled in, it became more manageable. The schedules were adjusted to accommodate additional testing time. Testing typically began around 7:40am and ended at varying times. Additionally, passing periods were reduced to just 3 minutes, so students had to hurry to their next classes. During that week, many teachers assigned less homework, allowing students a little break before testing.
State wide testing Statewide testing in Indiana is crucial because it gives a clear view of how students are doing overall, helping teachers and teaching staff see if the educational programs are working. Plus, it highlights where improvements are needed in both teaching and student learning, making sure everyone gets a good education. I-LEARN DOE says, “Indiana’s Learning Evaluation and Assessment Readiness Network (ILEARN) is the summative accountability assessment for Indiana students in grades three through eight and high school biology. ILEARN measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards for English/Language Arts for grades three through eight, Mathematics for grades three through eight, Science for grades four and six, and Social Studies for grade five.” That gives you more detailed information about testing and its importance.
So to conclude, I-LEARN testing is important for measuring EJHS students' progress and achievement. And to create a positive environment during testing, the student council decorated the doors with themes. Adjusted schedules and lighter homework helped students focus on their performance. The information gathered from I-LEARN improves teaching methods and ensures students get the support they need to succeed.
