One of the biggest sports at EJHS, Track and Field, has something for everyone: running, jumping, and one of the most overlooked parts of track, throwing. But what is throwing?
Throwing has two main parts of it, Shotput and Discus. Shotput uses a metal ball that can weigh different things; for example, one ball could weigh 6 pounds while another one could weigh 8 pounds. Shotput takes place in a sandy area, so when the ball lands, it will leave a mark for the people running the event to measure. Discus uses a disc in a huge grassy area; every discus weighs the same, so it doesn't matter which discus you choose.
There are strict rules in throwing. There is a white line on your left and right side, and when the ball or disc lands on or outside that white line, you get a scratch. A scratch is where the throw, no matter how good the throw is, does not count towards your score. When you get three scratches, you get disqualified. The throwers will get warm-up throws before the real throwing starts, so the throwers won't scratch as much.
Most of the meets that Edgewood goes to, the throwers usually score pretty high on the leaderboard. Some of the top people in shotput and discus are Jude McCormick, Addison Clark, Madeline Jackson, Micah Lawerence, and Jamia Lewis. The throwers are coached by Coach Davis, and a quote from a thrower, Mallory Wilkie, says, “It's a great exercise and really fun to participate in.” Every Wednesday, the throwers go to the weight room and Randi Jackson helps with it, leading the throwers through medball stretches and lifting weights.
In conclusion, the throwers have two main things they throw, they have strict rules like scratching, and some of their top people are Jude McCormick, Jude McCormack, Addison Clark, Madeline Jackson, Micah Lawerence, and Jamia Lewis.
