090200 Medieval Studies - Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 (NCAA)
1 credit
In Medieval Studies, students will embark on a journey through a complex period of conflict and change often known as "the Middle Ages." Beyond historical narratives, this course examines this era through a variety of approaches, including social, economic, political, ethnic, cultural, military, psychological, sociological, gender, religious, and scientific perspectives. This course will examine five units of study, including the rise and fall of empires in the Early Middle Ages, the structure of the feudal system and the influence of the Catholic Church, Medieval cultures outside Europe in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, the clash of cultures in the Crusades, and the sweeping changes brought by the Black Death and the Late Middle Ages. Students will evaluate key historical events, actors, and leaders to understand their impact on Medieval society. They will also explore the daily life of people in medieval times, from peasants to knights, and examine the art and literature that emerged during this period. This range of case studies includes the lives of famous men and women, selections of historical texts and contemporary fiction, and cultural artifacts such as paintings and architecture. Through analytical reading, writing, and project-based learning, students will develop critical thinking skills and engage with Medieval perspectives. By the end of the course, students will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of the Medieval era and how it influences the modern world.
