Using Turnitin Before an Assignment Submission

As stated in Submit an Assignment with Turnitin, Turnitin is an optional feature connected to Moodle Assignments that provides a similarity checking service for written work. If this feature is enabled by a faculty member for an assignment, this will compare your paper against text found in a number of sources including a database of previously submitted papers, the internet, as well as published journals, periodicals and publications.

Some faculty members will enable Turnitin for drafts of an assignment submission. Doing so will allow students to compare the work they are submitting with other published work and generate a similarity report before submitting the assignment for grading. This similarity report gives a percentage of how much content was found in other works, giving the student the ability to go back and edit as necessary, and submit an edited version of their assignment.

The similarity report percentage is NOT A GRADE and will only be displayed for a draft if your instructor has enabled it.

Step 1: Select the Assignment

Step 2: Click Add submission.

Step 3: Add a File by selecting the paper icon.

Step 4: Select Upload File.

Step 5: Select Choose File.

Step 6: Select the file you wish to submit from your computer. Once selected, it will show the document name next to the "Choose File" button. Add a Name in the Save as section.

Step 7: Select Upload this file

Step 8: Select Save changes.

Step 9: After selecting Save changes, you will be directed to the Submission Status page. Please note the status as draft and that there is a notification underneath the file you uploaded. The Turnitin status will state queued as it is waiting to be run through the system.

Step 10: After the report has been run through the system, a percentage will display underneath your file.

Note: This report can take upwards to 10-20 minutes to display.

Step 11: If you select the percentage, you can see the similarity report Turnitin has generated. Please go to the Interpreting Similarity Report page to learn how to read the report.

Step 12: After reading the report, you can decide whether the percentage given is acceptable to submit as is or if you need to make some edits to your paper. If you are making edits to your paper, you will need to resubmit your assignment. Select Edit Submission on the Submission Status page to do so.

Step 13: To remove the old copy, Select the file.

Step 14: A pop up will appear. Select Delete. Another pop-up will appear asking if you are sure you want to delete. Select OK.

Step 15: After removing the old file, go through Steps 3-9 again to add your revised file.

Step 16: If needed, another similarity report can be generated for the updated file, just follow Steps 11-12. If you are satisfied with the new report generated, select Submit assignment.

Step 17: Confirm you wish to submit your assignment.

Note: After submission, you will see the status as Submitted for grading, meaning you are not able to make any changes.
