Google Docs

Google Docs is an application within the Google suite that allows you to create, edit, send, and colloborate on a word-processing document. This document can be stored in your Google Drive, allowing you to access it anywhere you have internet. In addition, you can also collaborate with others on projects, assignments, and papers.

Accessing Google Docs

There are a few different ways to access Google Docs. Listed below are the most common and easiest ways to access your Google documents. 

Option A: Google Drive

Step 1: Navigate to your Google Drive Homepage.

Step 2: Select + New located in the upper left corner of the page

Step 3: Select Google Docs from the drop down panel. Clicking Google Docs will open a new tab or window with a blank Google Doc file. 

Optional: Select > next to Google Docs and the option to create a new blank document or choose from a template

Option B: Gmail

Step 1: Navigate to your Gmail page

Step 2: Select the Waffle icon in the upper right corner

Step 3: Select the Google Docs icon in the pop-up panel. This will open the Google Docs homepage.

Step 4: Choose to create a new document using a blank template or a pre-loaded template. View any google docs that have already been created below the template gallery bar. 

Using Google Docs

When you open a new Google Doc, it will be Untitled. Select the Untitled document text box and re-name it to the preferred document name.

Google Docs carries many of the same text-editing and word-processing tools as Microsoft Word or Text-Editor. Explore the Google Support Page on Creating, Editing, and Formatting for more information.

Google Docs allows for real-time collaboration with other users. When a document is first created, it is private and only available for editing to the creator. Select the Share button in the upper right corner to invite collaborators to view, comment, or edit the document. Once your document has been shared, the top of the document page will indicate if other collaborators are viewing the document simulatenously through user icons.
