I used to think...that the US needed more immigrants. Being the child of immigrants into this county and living among and knowing many other prosperous immigrants, I believe that immigrants provide services and skills that the US doesn't often have with just its own labor force. I know that there are people who believe that immigrants are just stealing "American jobs", but I'd like to remind people that the US is a country built by immigrants and has become successful because of the labor done by people who do not originate from here. This strategy has brought this country immense success and wealth, so why not continue? Immigrants don't have many downsides.
Now I think...the US must increase the rate of immigration. I loved the article "The US needs more immigrants" by Jack Goldstone because it looked at the issue of immigration from an economic lens. By using numbers, he essentially took bias out of the equation. The numbers presented showed that the US needs immigrants. Currently, the US working population is stagnant. With the baby boomers retiring, the working population will reduce. Immigrants can fill this gap. The US GDP is also increasing at a measly rate of 1-2 percent per year. According to the article, immigrants can provide the necessary resources, skills and labor to better the US economy. Lastly, the US absolutely needs immigrants in order to prevent an economic crisis. The article says that "The current rate of growth puts the US squarely on track to exhaust the Social Security and Medicare funds in less than two decades. The best hope for stimulating faster growth to prevent a fiscal meltdown is to add more workers". The native born population isn't enough to achieve this goal. Therefore, we need immigrants.
I believe that Jack Goldstone is liberal(democrat) but is economically conservative

Excellent evidence-based argument for both essays
You could have had a higher score if you had found exception to one or more of Goldstone's arguments
