Dear Summerside Eagle Families,
It's the most wonderful time of the year! There is a sense of joy and drive at Summerside at all times with our Summerside Eagles doing an outstanding job taking great care of themselves, others, and our school and community in so many ways. One way is our annual PTO food drive which has been extended into next week to continue to serve and support 35 Summerside families this holiday season. See the flyer below for guidance on what to donate but please note, we will accept any donation, regardless of grade level designation.
As we head into this last week before the holiday break, know that we are still in full swing academically too. You can ask your first grader to create a joining or separating math word problem for you and your fifth graders about how sound travels and if a bowling ball or a feather would drop first if in an air-sealed environment. Our second graders are busy researching and reporting on different animals and their writing is so advanced as they synthesize all they are learning! Our teachers and students remain focused on keeping your children safe while learning, leading, and succeeding every day. Please be sure to see below for celebrations of hard work by Mrs. Hardy and the second grade in kicking off this holiday season for us and for insight into what is happening in each grade level, upcoming events, including festive spirit wear for the week ahead!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Courtney & Ms. Lowe
Our kindergartners have been using a variety of texts focused on the Gingerbread Man to engage in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies work. You can ask your kindergartner about their favorite story and the adventures they wrote about their Gingerbread Man having in school!
Grade-level newsletters will be updated every two weeks.
Our Discover team newsletter will be updated quarterly.
Updated for today's Eagle Insight!
Second Grade Holiday Performance
Our second graders performed holiday music for a captive audience Thursday evening and for the entire school Friday afternoon! They did a fantastic job! Thank you to Mrs. Hardy, the second-grade team, and everyone who provided extra support for going above and beyond to make this night so special!
Summerside Nutrition Council
Students from all grade levels were invited to give our cafeteria staff feedback on different meal options and provide insight into our current cafeteria offerings.
Cell Phones and Smartwatches
We are noticing many Summerside students are bringing cell phones and/or Smartwatches to school and using these devices during school hours. Please be aware that using a Smartwatch, cell phone, or other personal communication devices during school hours is prohibited, per West Clermont School Board Policy. The usage of devices during school hours is distracting to all learners; please remind your child to reach out to their teacher if they need assistance or need to communicate with you during the school day.
A Notice From Heidi Sandlin, District Nurse
As the weather turns colder, we are reminded that we have entered cold and flu season. The following tips can help you protect yourself and others and help prevent the spread of germs.
Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others.
Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.
Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
Practice other good health habits.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Winter Weather and School Closings
As we move into wintertime, it is important for everyone to be prepared in the event we would have to close our schools due to weather issues. We encourage you to check out the article on our website entitled, "How Emergency Weather Decisions Are Made in West Clermont."
West Clermont 'Focus on Facilities' Town Hall Series
At our next series of Town Halls, we will be turning our focus to the school buildings in West Clermont. During these Town Hall events, we will examine the changing needs in facilities as well as the challenges of aging buildings, limited space, and the need for modern learning environments for our students. Through the Town Hall process, we will establish a Community Advisory Team that will assist the district in the formation of a Master Facilities Plan that is educationally-appropriate, financially responsible, and community-supported. Make sure your voice is heard! Join us on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at West Clermont Middle School (1341Clough Pike, Batavia, OH 45103). The Town Hall will begin at 6 PM. Seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot here!
