As a result of this module, staff will understand how having students draw non-linguistic representations aids retention, actively engages students in making meaning, and provides overall benefits to students’ brains.
Participants will leave feeling more confident and capable when drawing in front of, alongside of, and when coaching students to create non-verbal representations.
Content
Step One: Get Your Brain Ready
As you ready your brain to interact with this module, reflect on the following questions. Choose two of the questions to respond to by jotting a few bullet points on paper.
How does drawing serve my learners?
What role does drawing play in my instructional practices/lessons in the brick and mortar and online environments?
How comfortable am I when drawing in front of my students? Why so?
How comfortable am I when guiding students to create drawings? Why so?
Step Two:Ready...
Set... Grab a few sheets of blank paper and a sharpened pencil or two…
GO... Hit "Play" and join us. Hit "Pause" when prompted to work on your drawings, then start the video again when you're ready.
Step Three: Reflect
Revisit your initial thoughts/responses. Have your thoughts changed? If so, how so? Write a few lines to explain.
Interaction/Try-out/Sandbox
Keeping in mind how drawing skills can be developed over time, continue to practice drawing emojis, animals, figures, etc. Feel free to repeat and/or explore new drawings based on your interactions with the video.
Consideration:We have had the opportunity to bring this PD to KA Staff and a couple of our first-grade teachers. We welcome the chance to bring it live to you, as folks have found so much benefit in the social processing that occurs, which has led to additional strategies/insights being shared.
If this is of interest to you, let Linda and Jeff know and we will seek opportunities to offer additional voluntary, face-to-face sessions.
Evidence
Consider an existing lesson that could be revised or an upcoming lesson where students could use drawing as a tool for learning desired content.
Revise or create your lesson and include a link to your lesson plan in your Individual Professional Learning Plan 2.0.
Special thanks to Linda Baughman and Jeff Mitchell for creating this module.
