To share content with students

The list could go on and on. When you can’t stand next to a student and point to their screen to show them where to click, or sit down with them during a writing conference and walk them through ideas for making their work better, you can screencast. A recording might not be quite as personal as face-to-face, but it’s better than nothing.

Use the resources below to learn more about screencasting and what features to look for when choosing a screencasting platform. If you’re like most of us, FREE is probably your first concern. Everything shared on this page is either free or available to our teachers because we’ve already paid for it. Granted, some of the free versions come with some limitations, but if you’re creative and can transfer your skills from one platform to another, you should be able to do what you need with the tools we have available.

Screencastify is a Chrome browser extension that allows you to start recording your screen in just a few clicks. The free version limits your recordings to 5 minutes, which helps you chunk your lessons for students. Save directly to Google Drive or YouTube.

You can create a screencast using Zoom by starting a meeting yourself and recording it. Choose to keep your camera on or off, depending on whether you want your face to appear on the screencast. Zoom can also be helpful when recording a screencast of a presentation that includes a video. Some screencasting options will not allow the sound of the video to come through, but recording a Zoom meeting - with the proper settings - makes this easy. Watch this video to learn more.

After exploring one or more of the screencasting options above, choose one and create a short video. Experiment with options such as using just your webcam, recording just your screen, or recording both at the same time. Investigate the editing features that are available. Can you trim the ends of your video right in that program, or do you need to export it to an editing app?
