Before
Last spring, our staff used Zoom to hold class meetings to continue the relationships established in our classroom throughout the year, support students' mental health, and to be together as a community of learners. Let’s begin our exploration of Virtual Morning Meetings by reflecting back on our experiences this spring. What were your class meetings like? What worked well for you? What was difficult? What strategies or activities did you embed into your class meetings?
Don’t forget that we already have valuable knowledge on this topic, and we can learn from each other’s experiences!

7 Ways to Maintain Relationships During Your School Closure
We are all professional relationship builders when we have the opportunity to meet with students face-to-face in our classrooms. Remote learning poses a unique set of challenges in building and maintaining those relationships.
Posted in March, the Edutopia article linked below highlights different virtual relationship building strategies that can be implemented by teachers. It builds the “compelling why” and provides some answers of “how” the goal of developing positive relationships between all can be achieved in a virtual setting.
As you read the article, consider:
Which strategies have I already tried?
Which strategy/strategies might I want to try?
How could these strategies be included in a Morning Meeting?
How could these strategies be modified to fit the context of the beginning of the year?
Depending on your experience with Virtual Morning Meetings and the goals you have for your own learning, choose one of the two following options:
Option 1: Explore Morning Meeting Routines
Everyone may implement a Morning Meeting with their own particular style, but the general components of the meeting are similar. These components are important for establishing a routine and to help participants know what to expect; particularly with the delivery being through Zoom.
Morning Meeting Components:
Expectations and Norms
Greeting/Check-In
Sharing
Activity
Announcements/Message
The following are blogs posts about how different teachers put these components into practice during their virtual meetings. Choose 2-3 links to explore. As you are reading, consider how the different elements meet the goal of building and nurturing relationships, and consider what strategies or activities you might want to try for your own Morning Meeting.
Option 2: Dig Deeper into the Parts of Morning Meeting
Choose 1 or 2 of the Morning Meeting components you are interested in learning more about. View the Google Slides of each component to read more behind the rationale and to get some new ideas for your toolbox!
Here’s a look at how a fourth grade teacher at Elmwood incorporated the components to create a Morning Meeting that fits her teaching style and meets the needs of her students.
Create a “Morning Meeting” Google Slideshow or PowerPoint template to use this year with your students.
Think about the different components and which parts you believe are important to include. How can you make your Morning Meeting fit your grade-level and your classroom?
