Learning Experience 6
During Week 7, students will transition from the design phase to the building phase of the project. They will revise their initial designs based on feedback received and plan their approach for constructing their model shelters.
Objectives:
Revise and refine design concepts based on feedback.
Begin construction of model shelters using recyclable materials.
Collaborate effectively with partners to bring design ideas to life.
Activities:
Review and Discuss Designs: Students will review their initial design sketches and discuss any necessary modifications or improvements with their partners.
Gather Materials: With the assistance of parents, students will collect the recyclable materials listed in the project guidelines.
Construction Begins: Students will begin constructing their model shelters using the gathered materials. They will focus on incorporating features that address the needs of the Australian animals discussed in previous lessons.
Teacher Guidance: Teachers will provide guidance and support as students navigate the construction process, ensuring safety measures are followed, especially with potentially hazardous materials like wire.
Learning Experience 7 - Presentation of Designs and Models
In Week 8, students will have the opportunity to present their completed designs and models to the class. This presentation phase allows students to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills while receiving feedback from their peers.
Objectives:
Present completed model shelters to the class.
Explain design choices and the reasoning behind them.
Listen to and provide constructive feedback to peers.
Activities:
Preparation: Students will prepare to present their model shelters, ensuring they are well-organised and ready to explain their design choices.
Presentations: Each group will take turns presenting their model shelters to the class, highlighting key features and explaining how their design addresses the needs of the chosen Australian animal.
Peer Feedback: After each presentation, classmates will provide feedback on the strengths of the design and offer suggestions for improvement.
Reflection: Students will reflect on the feedback received and consider any changes they may want to make to their model shelters before the final phase of the project.
Learning Experience 8 - Reflection and Iteration
During Week 9, students will reflect on their design and construction process, considering what they have learned and how they can apply it in the future. This phase encourages critical thinking and self-assessment, empowering students to identify areas for improvement and make adjustments accordingly.
Objectives:
Reflect on the design and construction process.
Identify strengths and areas for improvement in their model shelters.
Consider how they would approach the project differently in the future.
Activities:
Group Reflection: Students will discuss their experiences throughout the project, focusing on what went well and what challenges they encountered.
Individual Reflection: Each student will independently reflect on their contributions to the project, considering their role within the group and their personal growth.
Iteration: Based on their reflections, students will identify any changes they would make to their model shelters if allowed to redo the project.
Class Discussion: The class will come together to share their reflections and discuss common themes and insights gained from the project.
Documentation: Teachers will document students' reflections and use them to inform future project-based learning experiences.
