This two-week unit develops student knowledge, understanding and skills of equivalence and how it is represented in mass and whole numbers. Students are provided opportunities to:
develop an understanding of equal as equivalence through exploring mass
explore and reason about number relations
use number relations in combining and separating numbers.
Students would benefit from prior experience with:
experiences hefting and measuring the attribute of mass
opportunities to develop confidence in using mathematical terms to communicate learning such as mass, heavy, heavier, heaviest, about the same as, one more, one less, or equal
explicit modelling and multiple opportunities for guided and independent practice to develop counting with understanding and other counting principles.
