Core concept: Part of a group can be taken away to model subtraction.
Arrange a group of 10 items on a surface. Cover the items and explain that you will briefly show the items and you would like to know how many they see.
Reveal the items for 3 to 4 seconds before covering them again. Ask students to share how many they saw and how they saw them. Select a few students to share what they saw. Reveal the items and check the number of items by counting in unison.
Ask students if there is another way to arrange the collection that would allow us to recognise 10 easily. Invite students to arrange items and explain their reasoning for their ideas.
Cover the items and discreetly remove a few items. Reveal the remaining items and ask students:
How many items are there?
How many disappeared?
