What Do Diesel Mechanics Do?

Diesel service technicians and mechanics inspect, repair, and overhaul buses, trucks, or any vehicle with a diesel engine. 

Work Environment

Diesel service technicians and mechanics usually work in well-ventilated and sometimes noisy repair shops. They occasionally repair vehicles on roadsides or at worksites. Most diesel technicians work full time, and overtime and evening shifts are common.

DATC Diesel/Heavy Duty Technology CC

900 Hours (10 Months)

The Diesel/Heavy Duty Technology program provides training in a variety of diesel powered vehicles, engines, and power systems. Students explore the theory of operation and preventive maintenance of diesel systems and progress to actual hands-on work in the maintenance and repair of transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering and suspension, wheel alignment, hydraulics and engine rebuilding. After demonstrating foundational knowledge, students begin working with the latest advances in the trucking industry in engine design, micro-processing, air conditioning, and transmissions.

MTECH Diesel Technology Certificate

930 hours

The Diesel Technology curriculum follows the guidelines for Heavy Duty Vehicle and Equipment diagnostics and repair established by Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) Foundation. The curriculum follows the safety requirements, areas of focus, time frames and recognized task list designed by the above two agencies. This is the base curriculum . Upon completion of our program and working a year in the industry, you will have the opportunity to pass all the ASE certification tests. Students can become an ASE Master Technician once they pass all ASE certification tests and after working for 2 years in industry.

SLCC Diesel Service Technician And Driver CC

905 Hours

This program is designed to train students in diesel systems technology. Technicians in this field repair and maintain diesel equipment, such as trucks, buses, construction and mining equipment. This includes bulldozers, earth movers, cranes and other diesel-power equipment.  Diesel technicians use testing equipment like dynamometers, which measure engine power. Computer based diagnostic equipment is also used to assist in diagnoses of engines, transmissions, and other vehicle based systems. 


SLCC Diesel Systems Technology CC

33 Credits

This Certificate of Proficiency program will allow students to be able to be prepared and obtain a job in the Diesel industry at an earlier time.  This Automobile Service Excellence-Education Foundation (ASE-EF) Accredited program offers our students technician training encompassing the study and application of heavy-duty systems theory, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair procedures. Where possible, students complete “live work” to gain practical experience and to demonstrate proficiency to industry standards.

745 hours

SLCC Apprenticeship Diesel Systems Technology AAS

65 Credits

Generally, Diesel Apprenticeship faculty members are chosen from experienced field technicians who are working in the field and have a minimum of six years’ experience. Course instructors can be full-time faculty or can be hired as adjunct on a semester-by-semester basis.
