What Do Automotive Service Technicians Do?

Automotive service technicians and mechanics inspect, maintain, and repair cars and light trucks. 

Work Environment

Most automotive service technicians and mechanics work in well-ventilated and well-lit repair shops. Although technicians often identify and fix automotive problems with computers, they commonly work with greasy parts and tools, sometimes in uncomfortable positions.

DATC Automotive Technology Certificate

1200 Hours (13 Months)

Students enrolled in the Automotive Technology program will utilize industry standard tools and procedures for entry-level automotive servicing, diagnostics, and maintenance. The program offers a learning environment similar to what students should expect to encounter in the automotive servicing, diagnostics, and maintenance industries. Students will gain valuable hands-on experience servicing and practicing their skills on a large variety of vehicle makes and models – both foreign and domestic –while completing the program.

MTECH Automotive Technology Certificate

1350 hours

The Automotive Technology curriculum follows the guidelines established by the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF) and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) now called the ASE Education Foundation. The curriculum follows the safety requirements, areas of focus, time frames and recognized task list designed by the above two agencies.  This is our Base Curriculum. In addition, we also offer web based training for Ford, Subaru, and FCA (Fiat/Chrysler America) which is integrated into our courses. This gives students the option to jumpstart their careers into any dealership service center across the nation for these companies, or work for any independently owned repair facility.  Upon completion of our program and working a year in the industry, you will have the opportunity to pass all the ASE certification tests to become an ASE Master Technician, plus get a great start on some Manufacturer Specific Web Based Factory Training by one or more of our industry sponsors. 

MTECH Automotive Vehicle Emissions Course Certificate

20 Hours

The Emissions Test Preparation Training is a non-credit 20-hour class designed to help an auto technician prepare for the Utah County Emissions Certification, by gaining a basic knowledge of the automobile engine mechanical, cooling, fuel, electrical, and emission control systems. The material covered in this course will prepare the technician for the Utah County Emissions Test. 


MTECH Automotive Vehicle Safety Inspection Course Certificate

16 Hours

The Safety Inspection course is a 16 hour standardized curriculum that provides the necessary training and testing for individuals performing vehicle safety inspections. MTECH offers a combined 16 hour course for the certification in two of the three separate Vehicle Safety Inspector Certifications: Passenger Vehicles/ Light Trucks, Motorcycles In Utah there are three separate Vehicle Safety Inspector Certifications; Passenger Vehicles/Light Trucks, Motorcycles, and Heavy Trucks/Trailers/Buses.

MTECH's 16 hour course only offers training for the certification in Passenger Vehicles/Light Trucks and Motorcycles. MTECH does not offer a course for certification in Heavy Trucks/Trailers/Buses. Participants must score 80% or more on the final examination and performance checklist to achieve competency for the course and receive a certificate. Individuals who successfully complete the training will be eligible to apply for their Vehicle Inspection Certification from the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Snow Automotive Technology AAS

The program is designed to give students an in-depth knowledge of repairing and maintaining automobiles. Students who complete the program can expect a career in a variety of automotive fields including becoming a technician, service manager, shop foreman, service consultant, a parts technician with the option of working in a dealership, an independent repair shop, or your own business.
