What Emergency Medical Technicians Do

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics respond to emergency calls, performing medical services and transporting patients to medical facilities. 

Work Environment

Most EMTs and paramedics work full time. Their work can be physically strenuous and stressful, sometimes involving life-or-death situations.

DATC Emergency Medical Technician CP

136 Hours (3 months)

The Emergency Medical Technician program provides instruction on out of hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. Emergency Medical Technicians are a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system. 


DATC Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

148 hours (4 months) 

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program offers instruction on providing basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. Students will build the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a wide range of care and transportation for patients. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a critical link from the scene to the emergency health care system. 


Training Programs at MTECH

MTECH  Emergency Medical Technician

225 hours  

This program will train students to respond as an EMT, who has the emergency skills to assess a patient’s condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. Individuals interested in employment with Law Enforcement, Fire Fighting, or Emergency Medicine must be EMT certified. EMT Licensure can increase chances of job placement in several fields ie. law enforcement, fire safety. Training includes clinical and classroom hands-on training. 


MTECH Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

135 hours (4 months) 

Advanced EMT (AEMT) is the second level of emergency medicine.  To reach this next level of certification, AEMTs will complete additional training hours, learn additional skills, and gain more confidence in their patient care. Additional skills taught at this level include, but are not limited to: intravenous infusion, advanced airway management, and medication administration.  Students must be at least 18 years of age and be certified at the EMT level in order to take the AEMT course. 


MTECH Emergency Medical Technician - Accelerated 

225 hours 

This program will train students to respond as an EMT, who has the emergency skills to assess a patient’s condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. Individuals interested in employment with Law Enforcement, Fire Fighting, or Emergency Medicine must be EMT certified. EMT Licensure can increase chances of job placement in several fields ie. law enforcement, fire safety. Training includes clinical and classroom hands-on training.

Topics include HAZMAT awareness, basic first aid, patient assessment, triage, multi-casualty, emergent and non-emergent patient moves (with and without CNS injury), airway management, CPR, shock & bleeding control, and more. Students can become key members of the EMS system.

SLCC Emergency Medical Technician AAS

13 Weeks

The Program satisfies the training requirements for those who are interested in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Advanced EMT (AEMT). The training is designed to prepare the student for the real world of medical care by giving the knowledge, skills, hands-on experience, and the technical background to provide such care. The training is also applicable to nursing, physical therapy, law enforcement and private security personnel. To be licensed by the State of Utah, you must be 18 years of age and have no major felony convictions, complete all course and testing requirements. You must attend all scheduled classes.

The Emergency Medical Technician and First Responders Certificate of Proficiency is designed to help train students seeking to start a career as a first responder. With hands-on training and externship hours spent in the field, students will be able to gain an industry certification along with practical experience. This certification is applicable for those looking to go into Law Enforcement, Fire Fighting or Emergency Medicine, or for those looking to learn a new skill.
