Engineering Drafting & Manufacturing Technology

What Drafters Do

Drafters use software to convert the designs of engineers and architects into technical drawings.

Work Environment

Although drafters spend much of their time working on computers in an office, some may visit jobsites in order to collaborate with architects and engineers. Most drafters work full time.

What Quality Control Inspectors Do

Quality control inspectors examine products and materials for defects or deviations from specifications.

Work Environment

Working conditions vary by industry, establishment size, and specific duty. Most quality control inspectors work full time during regular business hours. Overtime may be required to meet production deadlines.

SLCC Engineering Drafting and Manufacturing Technology CC

29 Credits

Engineering Design/Drafting Technology is a profession that encompasses a variety of engineering disciplines that are always in high demand: mechanical, civil, piping, electronics, structural, and industrial. Students develop skills in technical drafting, CAD (Computer Aided Design), and the drafting practices specific to each of these discipline areas. Drafters and designers are an integral part of a project team in every field, developing the drawings and designs for fabrication and construction.

SLCC  Engineering Design Manufacturing Technology AAS

67-69 credits

The Associate of Applied Science degree in Engineering Technology with emphases in either “Product Design Engineering Technology (PDET), “Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET), or “Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MFET) provides the student with a solid foundation in electronics theory and application, as well as established and emerging technologies. This program is designed for students who intend to enter the work force after obtaining the AAS degree or transfer to other USHE institutions. The courses emphasize mastery of theory as well as attainment of skills and competencies through Lab experiences that are vital to workforce needs.

Students who complete one of these Associates of Applied Science degrees in PDET, MET, or MFET can pursue careers in many areas such as research and development, Industrial Automation, space, defense, government, consumer products, and many more. Examples of occupations include mechanical drafters, mechanical designers, product designers, CNC programmers, tool designers, production planners, quality technicians, manufacturing and production technicians, and many more.

Training Programs at USU Eastern
