What Fashion Designers Do

Fashion designers create clothing, accessories, and footwear.

Work Environment

Fashion designers work in wholesale or manufacturing establishments, apparel companies, retailers, theater or dance companies, and design firms. Most fashion designers work in New York and California.

SLCC Fashion Design and Merchandising: Fashion Merchandising Emphasis AAS

63-65 Credits

Students electing to purse an AAS Degree in Fashion Merchandising will prepare themselves for entry level work in a wide range of careers, such as a fashion buyer, visual display artist, or apparel product developer, to name a few. Students will acquire skills specific to the area of Fashion Merchandising, for example: apparel buying, styling, fashion show production, and analyzing trends. Additionally, students may choose to complete internships with merchants, product developers, and retailers at store and corporate levels. 


SLCC Fashion Design and Merchandising: Fashion Design Emphasis AAS

67 Credits

Students will acquire skills specific to the area of Fashion Design including pattern making, draping, and sample making. Students electing to pursue an AAS degree in Fashion Design prepare for entry level work in a wide range of careers including but not limited to fashion designer, costume designer, and bridal wear designer. 


SLCC Fashion Design and Merchandising: Technical Apparel Emphasis AAS

67 Credits

Those working in Technical Apparel fields are involved in almost every stage of product development, including specifications, grading, patternmaking, sample making, fit, and production. They often work as part of a fashion design team, working closely with designers, manufacturers and merchandisers, and are integral to the production of a high-quality product. A sharp eye for fashion and a solid understanding of patternmaking are necessary for success in this field.

Students electing to pursue an AAS Degree in Technical Apparel will acquire skills and hands-on training such as pattern drafting, draping, apparel production, and creating “tech pacs,” using industry specific equipment in order to prepare them for Technical Apparel career pathways. Additionally, students will learn about important industry topics such as sustainability and social responsibility. Students will be prepared for entry-level work in a wide range of careers such as technical designers, sample makers, and pattern technicians.

What Interior Designers Do

Interior designers make indoor spaces functional, safe, and beautiful by determining space requirements and selecting essential and decorative items.

Work Environment

Many interior designers work in specialized design services or in architectural, engineering, and related services.

The Interior Design program is designed to develop technical skills, creativity, and an understanding of all aspects of Interior Design. The graduates of this program will be qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces for the purpose of improving the quality of life, increasing productivity, and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public.  


SLCC Interior Design CP

24 Credits 

The Interior Design program is structured to prepare students for entry into the varied professions within the field of interior design. Students will earn how to identify, research, and creatively solve problems related to the quality of interior environments. Interior Designers provide specialized services for planning both commercial and residential spaces. In addition, student will learn drafting techniques and how to use computer-aided design tools which will help them present their work to clients. Student will also gain an understanding of the legal and ethical issues that guide and direct the profession.
