What Pharmacy Technicians  Do

Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers or health professionals. 

Work Environment

Pharmacy technicians work in pharmacies, including those found in drug, general merchandise, and grocery stores, and in hospitals. Most work full time, but many work part time.

750 Hours (11 months)

The Pharmacy Technician program is designed to prepare individuals to support pharmacists by performing a wide range of practice-related duties for retail, hospital, compounding, long-term care, and mail-order and other pharmaceutical settings.

MTECH Pharmacy Technician CC

450 Hours

Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists dispense prescription medication. They work under the supervision of pharmacists, who must review all prescriptions before they are given to patients. If a customer’s question is about the medication or health matters, the pharmacy technician arranges for the customer to speak with the pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians working in hospitals and other medical facilities prepare a greater variety of medications, such as intravenous medications. They may make rounds in the hospital, giving medications to patients.

The ASHP/ACPE accredited pharmacy technician program at Salt Lake Community College provides the necessary training and externship experiences to prepare students to take a national pharmacy technician certification exam and to apply for state licensure with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. (DOPL)

Our graduates are highly recruited for positions in a wide range of settings to fill the urgent pharmacy technician workforce needs in our community.

Training Programs at USU Eastern

USU Eastern Pharmacy Technician Certificate CC

The Pharmacy Technician (PT) Program is a certificate program that can be completed in one year in addition to one semester of prerequisites and an externship of a minimum of 160 hours of experiential training following didactic training.  The program prepares and trains individuals for a career as a pharmacy technician.  Pharmacy Technicians  may seek employment in a wide variety of contemporary pharmacy settings,  PTs function by assisting the pharmacist in serving patients, maintaining medication and inventory control systems, and participating in the administration and management of pharmacy practice. The Pharmacy Technician  Program is an accredited program with American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).    Upon the successful completion of coursework, students receive a certificate of completion from Utah State University.  At that time students are eligible to submit an application and if accepted, sit for the certification through ASHP which will allow them to become a certified pharmacy technician.  Students successfully completing the program will be well prepared for a career as a pharmacy technician.
