What Heavy Machine Operators Do

A heavy equipment operator drives or controls construction equipment, including bulldozers, forklifts, backhoes, dump trucks, cargo trucks, and hydraulic truck cranes. They operate this equipment to assist in the construction of structures, including bridges, roads, and buildings.  

Work Environment

Heavy and civil engineering construction firms, specialty trade contractors, and local governments are the primary employers of heavy equipment operators. 

Those in this profession work in all types of weather. They must have the ability and be willing to work in adverse conditions, not just including extreme weather but enclosed spaces and heights up to 80 feet as well.

MTECH Heavy Equipment Operator Construction (CP)

480 Hours

This 3-year program combines on-the-job experience with 480 hours of classroom and lab experience. Level One students receive 160 hours of Classroom and Lab instruction in basic areas such as safety, construction math, use of hand tools and power tools. It progresses to the identification of heavy equipment, basic operational techniques, utility tractors, grades, and OSHA regulations.

4000 hours on the job to Journeyman

Located at the West Valley Geneva Gravel Pit at 6200 S. Mountain View Corridor, our instructors train apprentices onsite and on the job, so students receive the foundations and the applied training they need to succeed. 


MTECH  UDOT Flagger Training Certificate

3 Hours

Individuals who successfully complete this training will receive a Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) “Flagger” certification. Training is three hours and concludes with a final examination. The job of being a Flagger is an important one. The lives of workers and the traveling public rest with a flagger’s ability to competently perform the job. Certification is good for three years.

USU Eastern Heavy Equipment Operators CP

Skills for the Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate of Proficiency are competency-based, meaning a skill must be mastered before advancing on to the next skill. The program emphasizes hands-on training with support classes directly related to training. Students will benefit from hands-on equipment experience in addition to state-of-the-art simulators. This blending of teaching techniques facilitates mastery in multiple scenarios and equipment types. The Heavy Equipment Operator program is open-entry/open-exit, so students can enter when convenient.
