What Social and Human Service Assistants Do
Social and human service assistants provide client services in a variety of fields, such as psychology, rehabilitation, and social work.
Many social and human service assistants work for nonprofit organizations, for-profit social service agencies, and state and local governments. They generally work full time, and some work nights and weekends.

SLCC Family and Human Studies AS

The Family and Human Studies program is an interdisciplinary two-year program designed to help students develop the skills needed to provide professional services for children and families in a variety of settings. Students will gain a thorough understanding of current theories of human development, the family environment, and the ways in which they interact with one another, as well as with their broader physical and social contexts.
Students choose between two tracks: Family and Human Development (“FHD”) and Early Childhood Education (“ECE”).
The FHD track focuses on theory and research that helps us better understand and strengthen individuals and families. It serves as a foundation for students wishing to become social service providers, case managers, marriage/family therapists, child therapists/counselors, community service/outreach providers, elder care providers, youth service providers, child life specialists, women’s protective service providers, policy analysts, lobbyists, advocates, etc.
The ECE track is a CTE program that prepares students for (a) going directly into the workforce (CTE) or (b) transferring to a 4-year university to get a bachelor’s degree. It requires service learning and lab school participation, where the student is assigned to work with seasoned professionals.
SLCC Family and Human Studies AAS
66 Credits
Family and Human Studies students will be prepared to work with families and children within the field of early care and education as teachers and/or directors.
This introductory level program will acquaint students to the multi-faceted, multi-skilled early childhood profession. Students examine issues in the provision of services to children birth through age eight in a child care or elementary setting. The program may require Community-Engaged Learning and lab school participation where the student is assigned to work with seasoned professionals in the field enabling each to apply and further understand theoretical frameworks discussed in class.
SLCC Family and Human Studies CC
36 Credits
Family and Human Studies students develop the skills needed to provide professional early childhood education services for young children and families. This introductory level program will acquaint students to the multi-faceted, multi-skilled early childhood profession. Students examine issues in the provision of services to children birth through age eight in a child care or elementary setting. The program may require service learning and lab school participation where the student is assigned to work with seasoned professionals in the field enabling each to apply and further understand theoretical frameworks discussed in class.
The Certificate of Completion is for students who want intensive instruction in early childhood development, but are not seeking a two-year degree. The Certificate of Completion requires the same FHS courses as the two-year degrees, but eliminates most General Education requirements. Course-work completed in pursuit of the Certificate of Completion can be applied toward the AS and AAS degrees.
Training Programs at Snow
28 Credits
As a part of the Human Development program at Snow College, students learn skills for helping and understanding individuals, families, or groups. This is achieved through studying biological and theoretical approaches across the lifespan, as well as experiencing observational and hands-on learning with children in a laboratory setting. In addition to examining specific problems and phenomena, students learn how human service agencies and professionals deal with human development-related issues.

This two-semester program will prepare students to work as a para-professional in the fields of social work, geriatrics, health care, rehabilitation, and other human-service related agencies.
