What Nurse Assistants Do

Nursing assistants provide basic care and help patients with activities of daily living. Orderlies transport patients and clean treatment areas.  

Work Environment

Most nursing assistants and orderlies work in nursing and residential care facilities and in hospitals. They are physically active and may need to help lift or move patients. 

Training Programs at DATC

DATC Practical Nurse Certificate

900 hours (10 months)

The purpose of the Practical Nurse (PN) program at Davis Technical College is to prepare the graduate to function at the first educational level of nursing, the Licensed Practical Nurse, in a multitude of healthcare settings. Graduates will also be prepared to directly move into the next educational level of nursing: the Associate Degree. Classroom theory is provided concurrently with a variety of clinical practice situations 

DATC Nurse Assisting CC

115 hours (20 months) 

The Nurse Assistant is an important part of the healthcare team directly involved with patient care of the sick and elderly. The Nurse Assistant program prepares students to seek employment in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, home care, physical therapy, hospice, and doctor's offices. During the program, students will develop communication techniques necessary for employment in a healthcare setting. Also, students will demonstrate proficiency in giving personalized care, recording vital signs, and performing restorative services. Nurse Assistants perform rewarding work as they care for cognitively impaired residents, residents with mental health issues, and residents with unique social or physical needs. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be recommended to take the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR) State Certification exam to become a certified nursing assistant in the State of Utah.

MTECH Practical Nursing Certificate

900 hours

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) provide nursing care to clients with common health needs. They work under the direction of registered nurses, physician assistants, doctors and dentists. LPNs are often required to wear specific uniforms or scrubs, depending on the practice setting. Working with ill and injured individual can be very stressful and physically demanding. LPNs work in a variety of healthcare settings with diverse patient populations. 

MTECH Nurse Assisting Certificate

135 hours 

The Nurse Assistant Program is run under the direction of the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR).  Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) are valuable members of the healthcare team who work under a licensed nurse.  A CNA can work in a variety of healthcare settings such as: assisted living & skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, clinics, home health & hospice. This program is designed for students to receive their certification by completing coursework in a classroom setting through the use of textbooks, workbooks, demonstration, hands on skills, and clinical externships.  MTECH students will receive training on: infection prevention, proper body mechanics and positioning, caring for the resident and their environment, nutrition, body systems, mental health, and communication. Students will also be First Aid and CPR certified. Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible to sit for the state knowledge and skills certification exams.

Training Programs at SLCC

SLCC Certified Nurse Assistant CA

150 hours

This program is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to care for patients safely and to meet the State of Utah Nursing Assistant certification requirements. Students completing the program will learn to provide for the physical, physiological, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient within a hospital or long-term care facility. The curriculum includes an overall introduction to human relations, anatomy, physiology, as well as, consideration of body mechanics, disease processes, and therapeutic approaches. Skills will be practiced in a “patient’s room”, which is equipped with a hospital bed, a mannequin “patient” and all required equipment and supplies needed for each skill. Students will also gain valuable knowledge and hands-on experience by participating in long-term care and hospital clinicals. 


SLCC Nursing AAS

68 credits

The SLCC nursing program prepares students to sit for the NCLEX exam to be licensed as a registered nurse (RN). RN’s can choose from a variety of exciting career opportunities and practice in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, home health, assisted living facilities, state health agencies, and public health agencies.

Snow College Certified Nursing Assistant

The Snow College Allied Health Department offers CNA, ASN, and PN-RN programs. These programs develop the critical thinking skills necessary to be successful and provide opportunities to engage in the community and with patients. The nursing department also has a state-of-the-art lab facility on the Richfield and Ephraim campuses to give students a hands-on experience that is essential for a well-rounded education. The nursing department is committed to a thorough education that will enable students to have a successful career and be caring providers. 

Training Programs at USU Eastern

USU Nursing Program AAS

In the USU AAS Nursing Program, nursing theory is correlated with knowledge from the biological, physical, and behavioral sciences, as well as experiences in the classroom. Students learn in nursing skills laboratory and clinical settings, such as acute care hospitals, extended care facilities, ambulatory clinics, home care and other health related environments. 

Students have three options in nursing education at USU. Students can attend a one-year program to obtain a Certificate of Completion in Practical Nursing, that if successfully completed, allows students to apply for LPN licensure* and enter the job market; or if they are interested and qualified, can obtain an Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) in Nursing, that if successfully completed, allows them to apply for RN licensure.  

*Only available on the Blanding, Moab and Price campuses. In Tooele and Uintah Basin, Practical Nursing is offered through the Tooele and Uintah Basin Technical Colleges.



Training Programs at UVU

UVU Nursing ASN

70credits

The UVU Nursing Program is a student-centered engaged learning experience where faculty facilitates learning nursing care through simulation and patient care. The Associate in Science in Nursing w/BSN Completion (ASN) program prepares the graduate to function individually as a member of the healthcare team in structured healthcare settings in which clients have common health problems. Acceptance into the ASN program is by a competitive, point-based application process. Prerequisite courses must be completed before applying to the program. For more information on applying to the ASN program see our website at www.uvu.edu/nursing or contact the Pre-Nursing advisors in LC 404 at 863-6484. After completing the 4 semesters of the ASN program, students  would be eligible to graduate with an ASN and apply to take the NCLEX-RN exam. Graduates of the ASN program would be eligible to remain in the program, and seamlessly transition to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) portion of the program. BSN completion takes an additional 2 full time semesters if students have also completed all the GE requirements, ZOOL 4400, and MATH 1040 or MATH 2040.
