💛 September 25 | Issue #11 💛
Dear Brown School Family,
A week ago, we gathered to celebrate not only a generous act but also a commitment to enhancing our learning environment. We honored the Foushee family - Jonathan, Sarah, Alexandra, and Samantha, whose remarkable donation has transformed our school's atrium into a vibrant space for instruction and collaboration.
The Foushee family's contribution has provided us with beautiful, flexible outdoor furniture, allowing us to extend our classrooms outdoors. This new space will foster creativity, engagement, and collaboration. It is a testament to the belief that learning can happen anywhere, and we are immensely grateful for their vision.
The impact of this donation goes beyond the physical items; it reflects a deep commitment to education and community. The Foushee family understands the importance of providing our students with an inspiring environment where they can thrive. Their generosity will not only benefit our current students but will leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
As we look forward to utilizing this new space, let us remember that it stands as a symbol of our community's spirit and the belief that together, we can create a brighter future for our children. With that being said, this donation is a springboard for further development of the space. On the horizon are refinishing and waterproofing the concrete floor, creating a calming space while bringing nature and greenery together, and adding beautiful hand painted murals - all courtesy of our PTSA, Environmental Club, and High School Art Department.
On behalf of all of us here, thank you, Foushee family, for your incredible support and dedication. We are excited to see how this beautiful space will enhance our students' learning experiences.
Love,
Dr. Angela
We are excited to share information about our transition to standards-based grading (SBG) in our K-8 classrooms. This approach focuses on measuring student learning against specific learning goals or standards rather than traditional letter grades.
Here are some key points about SBG:
1. **Clarity of Learning Goals**: Each standard outlines what students need to know and be able to do. This helps both students and parents understand the expectations for mastery.
2. **Focus on Mastery**: Students are assessed on their understanding and skills in relation to the standards. They will have opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge multiple times, promoting a growth mindset.
3. **Detailed Feedback**: Instead of a single letter grade, students will receive feedback that highlights their strengths and areas for improvement, allowing for targeted growth.
4. **Holistic Assessment**: Assessments will include various methods, such as projects, presentations, and tests, to provide a comprehensive view of student learning.
We believe that this approach will foster a deeper understanding of the material and better prepare students for future challenges. We appreciate your support as we implement these changes, and we welcome any questions or concerns you may have. You may read more about this in the JCPS Assessing Learning & Grading Framework for Elementary and Middle Schools.
Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education.
Anytime you sign a student out early from school after a field trip or special event, the early dismissal will be considered unexcused. We are only able to excuse early dismissals due to illness, medical appointments, funerals, etc. when a note has been turned into the office.
If you are planning on visiting our school at 9:00 AM or later, you must enter our school through the Welcome Center (Door #2) on S. First Street. According to JCPS Board Policy, all visitors to our building must go through weapons detection systems as they enter. The weapons detection system at the pedway entrance closes at 9:00 AM, so that entrance is no longer available to visitors at that time.
Student-Led Conference Day will be held on Monday, September 30th from 7:50 AM to 2:50 PM. All visitors and students participating in conferences will need to enter the building through the Welcome Center (Door #2) on S. First Street and be prepared to go through our weapons detection system. Visitors are advised to remove all binders, laptops/tablets, umbrellas, and eyeglass cases prior to passing through the system. Please leave all items that can be considered a weapon (mace, knives, etc.) in your car as these cannot be brought into our school.
Please also be reminded that the parking lots behind the school are private lots, and our parents/visitors are not allowed to park there.
Please support our High School Quick Recall make it to Quiz Bowl in Chicago again this year! Most Mondays and Wednesdays, the High School Quick Recall will be selling cookies in the lobby, pedway and Carpool. This year the cost will be $2 for 3 cookies. So, have your two dollars ready on Mondays and Wednesdays starting next week!

Brown School PTSA voted to endorse Protect Our Schools KY because we believe that public dollars should be only used for public schools. Â This amendment on the November ballot, Amendment 2, would allow public funds to be allocated outside of public schools and given instead to unaccountable, private schools. Â Click here to learn more.
Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Louisville is hosting the campaign and all products will go to the 15th District PTA Clothing Assistance Program (CAP). CAP serves JCPS students, families, and schools. Feminine hygiene products—such as pads and tampons—are always in demand in schools, and the campaign offers several easy ways to help.Â
Brown PTSA will collect them on Conference Day. Just put them in the designated box in the welcome center.
Drop off donated items in the lobby of CAP, 1400 West JEfferson St - from 9 am to 2 pm Monday - Friday.
