💛 July 31 | Issue #3 💛
Dear Brown School Family,
I am super excited to be starting my 10th school year as the principal at Brown. As this new school year gets closer and closer, I am thrilled to welcome you and your students back to school. In just eight days, our building will be filled with 800+ bright faces. Our team has been working diligently to prepare for an exciting and enriching year ahead. Our dedicated staff is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment where every student can thrive.
Remember, our Back to School page has all the updated information that you'll need to ensure a successful start of school! We look forward to partnering with you to make this year a memorable and successful one for all our students.
Thank you for your continued support and trust in our school community. Let's make this year our best one yet!
Love,
Dr. Angela

Families,
Please read and complete the JCPS/Brown School Device Usage Agreement Form for each child you have who attends the Brown School.Â
Our School Technology Coordinator, Drew Paige, will email, text, or call home to explain any repairs or replacements the student's Chromebook needs and any amount owed to cover the damages.Â
For example, a broken Chromebook screen voids the warranty and will endure a service repair of $30 owed by the family. Â Students will be given a loaner Chromebook that they have to check in and out daily until payment for the damaged Chromebook has been received. Once the damage obligation has been fulfilled, students will receive a Chromebook replacement that they can then take home again.Â
Here is a drafted email example of what you can expect to see if your child's Chromebook were to sustain any damages.
We did not receive all of our chargers back last school year when students turned in their Chromebooks for the Summer. If your student has lost or broken their charger cord, it can be purchased in the Ursa Lab starting on the first day of school. Used Chargers are $10, and brand new ones are $25 cash or check made out to the Brown School.Â
If you have any questions regarding technology at Brown, please email Drew. (andrew.paige@jefferson.kyschools.us).
We are excited to announce that we have added two large classrooms for our third-grade students to Cubs Corner. We have requested that these rooms be painted and order whiteboards to be hung on the walls. Samantha and Andrew Boling are in the process of setting up their new classrooms this week to welcome their students. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and teachers to take advantage of this age-appropriate collaborative setting.
We are actively recruiting for two teaching positions for the 2024-25 school year.

We wanted to make everyone aware that we will be starting the year off with one of our retired teachers filling in for the 5th-grade teacher vacancy. Rita Nichols will teach 5th-grade math and social studies until a permanent teacher can be hired. Rita retired from Brown after 30 years of service as a 5th/6th grade math and social studies teacher. Over the past several years, she has served as one of our school's substitute teachers. We are very excited to have Rita serving our students this year!
Hello! My name is Christie Storm and I am excited to be joining the Brown family as a 4th grade teacher! All said and done, I have taught for 12 years, from Kindergarten through 10th grade, here in Kentucky, but also abroad - in Ecuador, Croatia, and South Africa. I have a Master's of Science in Elementary Education and a Master's of Science in Library Information Sciences. I am also the proud mother of three amazing sons.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, including two precocious pups, reading, trail running, yoga, and gardening. I look forward to meeting everyone!
Hello, my name is Eugenia Rodriguez Jaquez, and I am excited and grateful to join the Brown family as a Spanish Teacher. I was born and raised in Chihuahua, Mexico, and graduated from The University of Louisville with a Bachelor’s in Arts, a Master’s in Spanish, and a Certification in Latino Studies. I also hold a Master’s in Education K-12 in Spanish.Â
I began my professional career in Spanish Languages and Cultural Studies, which helped shape me into a more dynamic teacher. In recent years, I have worked in SCPS as an EL teacher with newcomers, helping them learn English and math. I have taught Spanish in FCPS and created a Latino Club promoting the Mexican Lottery, enriching my teaching experience.
In my spare time, I enjoy music, painting, and various forms of exercise. I am a proud mother to one amazing daughter and one son. I enjoy dancing to Latin music, creating paintings that highlight Latin American culture, and tending to my garden where I cultivate plants from my home country, Mexico. I love cooking and have learned to prepare different Latin dishes. I also love traveling to explore Latin American countries and have visited Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and El Salvador.
My teaching philosophy focuses on sharing the rich culture and traditions of Latino countries, promoting cultural equality, diversity, and mutual respect. I strive to get to know my students and their families, serving as an encouraging force and a coach in the subjects I teach. I believe the relationships formed between schools and families can be some of the strongest and most transformative. I aim to be as available as possible to my students and their families.
I am looking forward to this coming school year, meeting everyone, and being a part of the language department at The J. Graham Brown School.
My name is Maureen Shugars, and I look forward to working with all of you. I am excited to introduce myself as the new 7th and 8th Grade Science Teacher at J. Graham Brown School.Â
I have 18 years of experience in Jefferson County, teaching math and science to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Education from Bowling Green State University (in Ohio!) and a Masters Degree in School Counseling from Spalding University. I was an enlisted member of the Ohio Air National Guard for twelve years serving as help desk and safety supervisor for the unit. I am excited to bring my skills and experience to the Brown School.
My husband Mike and I have three children: Katie, John, and Jocelyn. We spend time together at the YMCA, Jefferson Memorial Forest, and Bernheim Forest. My daughter, Katie, is a Junior at Brown, and we are both happy to be going to school together. I am excited and eager to start a new year with a great group of students, colleagues, and school community!
Hi Brown family! My name is Robby Bernardi, and I am excited to be joining you all this year as the new elementary music teacher and middle and high school band director. I am from Louisville, KY and went to school in JCPS before going to the University of Louisville where I studied music education with a brass emphasis. During my time at UofL I was a member of the Cardinal Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and many other school ensembles. In addition to my Bachelors of Music Education I also received a Masters of Education in Teacher Leadership from UofL, and am currently working on a Masters of Music Education from Eastern Kentucky University.Â
I am currently a trombone player and Staff Sergeant in the 100th Army Band at Fort Knox. Before coming to Brown I taught 6th and 7th grade Career Pathways for two years at Anderson County Middle School, and then the last two years at North Bullitt High School as the band and choir director. While at North Bullitt I grew the band to twice the size it was when I first arrived, and led the band to receive their first distinguished rating in over five years at district concert assessment. During my free time I like to play trombone, spend time with my family, and ride bikes with multiple cycling groups around the city.
I am VERY excited to come to Brown and regrow the band program! I look forward to meeting all the staff and students including current band members, former band members that quit and want to come back, and anyone else that might be interested in joining band to try it out!

Everyone: If you are seeking mental health support, JCPS offers a matching service via an organization called Care Solace. This service is free and available to staff, students, and families. Care Solace helps connect people to mental health services in the community. If you would like to be connected to Care Solace, complete the Student Support Form (linked to the left under the hands), email, or call and we will get you in touch with a Care Team Member.
Schedule change request form will be available in Google Classrooms soon. Email change requests will not be honored. Robin will meet with students in study halls the first 10 days to get everything correct <3 Please exercise patience the first few days as we get adjustments made. Completing the form multiple times will delay the process, when you complete it, it gives you a spot in the virtual queue and I will do my best to work efficiently.
