💛 August 14 | Issue #5 💛
Dear Brown School Family,
What a smooth start to the school year! I am thoroughly impressed by the level of engagement from our students and the seamless execution of teaching in our classrooms. Already, students are deeply engaged in learning. There is no doubt in my mind that this is going to be an absolutely amazing year!
I have noticed a large number of students arriving on the front sidewalk in the mornings after 7:50, with the numbers increasing as we approach 8:00. We are required by state regulations to mark any student not inside the building at 8:00 AM as tardy to school. I have also noticed that we have hardly any students arriving between 7:20 and 7:35 AM. Please consider adjusting your arrival time so that your student is here on time. Let's work together to make your students' morning a positive experience!
Love,
Dr. Angela
Brown School Families, we are excited to offer our first elementary school Back-To-School Bash. Please plan to join us at Peace Park for this casual event next Friday, Aug. 23rd, from 6:00 to 7:30. This event will allow families to socialize with their students' new friends. We can't wait to see you and catch up.Â
Plan to bring a chair and buy dinner from the food trucks!
Music, Water, and Face paint will be present!Â
The cost is $10 cash for a student and one supportive adult (one adult is required per family) and $5 for each additional person. No advanced tickets were sold.
(PeeWee Prom 💙 will still take place in the spring.)
Many of our 8th graders last year did not return their novels that were used in Randi Skaggs' English class. If you have our copies of these books at your home, please send them into school ASAP to avoid being placed on an obligation list. Please label them for Lauren Nichols, 8th grade English Teacher.

This year, we will be focusing on attendance more than ever! Please make sure that you have your student to school on time and when they are absent, please send in a parent note or doctor's note. Just a reminder, you may have up to 10 parent notes per year. Once your child has 6 unexcused absences, they are by law, considered habitually truant. If I can help your family with any issues that may be keeping your student from attending school or being tardy, please reach out to me. I am here to help!

Mental Health Practitioner
As the year is starting up I just wanted to remind parents/guardians of the mental health services that are available to your students.Â
1. We have a quiet space in the Student Support Center. This area is available to all students who need a break to re-center themselves or calm down. All they need to do is ask their teacher to use the space, and they will have up to 15 minutes before needing to speak to a SST member.Â
2. Any member of the SST is able to refer your student or a family member for mental health services in the community through JCPS's partnership with Care Solace. If you would like external mental health services please reach out to me or your counselor to make a referall and walk you through the process.
3. Individual and Group services are available from me throughout the school year. I am able to meet with all students with parent/guardian permission. Typically I meet with students once a week for up to 30 minutes at a time (this can vary depending on need). If you are interested in my services please reach out to me via my email and I can send you a permission form to get services started.
4. If there are any other mental health concerns, or material/educational concerns that you feel we could help with please fill out a support form, and one of us will reach out to you within 3 school days.

The Schedule change request form are available in Google Classrooms. Email change requests will not be honored. Robin will meet with students in study halls the first 10 days to get everything correct <3 Please exercise patience the first few days as we get adjustments made. Completing the form multiple times will delay the process, when you complete it, it gives you a spot in the virtual queue and I will do my best to work efficiently.
Juniors and Seniors will be taking the ACT this year FOR FREE at school! Seniors in October, Juniors in March. Please complete THIS FORM (we will send home paper copies or send your student to Norah) and return it to Norah so that your student can send their score report to colleges FOR FREE! Even if they just want to send it to JCTC, they MUST have the form done.
Juniors and Seniors we are starting to plan college visit field trips and we would LOVE for parents to go with us as chaperones. Please complete JCPS' Background check and let Norah know by indicating which field trips you would like to attend when your student brings home a permission slip.Â
Already scheduled are:
Juniors to Spalding 9/10
Seniors to Spalding 9/18
Juniors to Bellarmine 9/26

We are having a great start to the new year! I've been really impressed with how kind and helpful our middle schoolers who have been at Brown for a while have been to the new to Brown middle schoolers. Thank you for encouraging your child to look out for themselves and others.
There is a fantastic opportunity for 8th and 9th graders that I posted in the google Classroom Class of 2029. See link below from the Muhammad Ali Center:
Muhammad Ali Center Council of Students
After this week there will be no more changes to electives for this semester. I've asked all middle schoolers to complete this form to request an elective change. Unfortunately there is not much space left in many classes so most students will have to keep their original schedule, but I will do the best that I can.
Tomorrow there will be a Peer Mediator Meeting from 2:50-3:50 in room 310A for all my mediators who were trained last year.
That's all for now! Please remember to utilize the Student Support Request Form if you have any questions or needs. Thanks so much.
