Dear Brown School Family,
I hope you and your family has had a wonderful summer so far, full of positivity and growth. I was lucky to be one of the chaperones who took our students to Costa Rica for 10 days in June. It was an invaluable opportunity to connect with 28 incredible young people while we engaged in whitewater rafting, hiking, kayaking, zip lining, swimming, milking cows, tasting new foods, and learning about nature. With that being said, I am taking a break from beans and rice for the next month.
We are gearing up for a great school year. As I embark on my 26th year working for JCPS and my 17th year at the J. Graham Brown School, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey I have been fortunate to undertake. It is with a deep sense of gratitude and humility that I approach this new school year. Each new school year brings with it the opportunity for growth, transformation, and endless possibilities. I am eager to witness the remarkable progress our students will make, both academically and personally, and to be a part of their journey towards self-discovery and achievement.
I am humbled by the unwavering support of the J. Graham Brown School community. Together, we will continue to strive for greatness and create a learning community that fosters empathy, resilience, joy, and a lifelong love for learning.
Here's to a year filled with endless possibilities, meaningful connections, and countless moments of celebration and achievement. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to embark on this year at JCPS and at J. Graham Brown School, and I look forward to the remarkable journey that lies ahead.
Love,
Dr. Angela

Last school year, we rolled out weapons detection screening at our school. This safety screening technology is an added layer of support for the safety and security of our students and staff.Â
This is a reminder that families are encouraged to help reduce the possibility of “false alerts” on everyday items while shopping for SCHOOL SUPPLIES. While none are prohibited, using these guidelines will ensure quick entry for everyone:
Select clear and plastic school supplies over covered/concealed and metallic when applicable.
Use three-ring binders with plastic spines/rings (non-metal).
Utilize plastic (versus metallic) BPA-free water/coffee bottles.
Use hard plastic eyeglass cases (versus metal).
Students should “pack-light” and limit the number of items in bags or other equipment.
Keep superfluous metallic items at home (game consoles, beauty products, USB drives).
Laptops and umbrellas will be passed around the technology via a staffed table.
People entering our building walk through an open-air kiosk that uses sensor technology to scan for weapons quickly. The system can identify dangerous items inside bags and pockets. For that reason, you can walk through the sensors without removing concealed belongings or being separated from personal items. Evolv scans as people walk through in real-time, ensuring that your school entry is not delayed. If an item in your possession alarms the system, the system’s green lights turn to red, and a photo of the person will be shown on a tablet visible to trained staff. The photo will have a red box around the potentially dangerous item. A trained staff member will then search the area indicated in the alert.
While weapon detection systems are another tool for maintaining safety in our schools, they do not guarantee that a weapon will not enter the building. We must all continue to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of our school community.Â
Hello Brown School family!
My name is Alexandra (Ally) White and I cannot express enough how grateful I am to be joining your community as your new 10th grade ELA teacher and middle/high school Theatre teacher. I am a Louisville native and JCPS alum of Male High School c/o 2016. I received my Bachelors degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in English Language Arts in the spring of 2020 and immediately began working later that fall for Valley High School teaching 9th grade ELA until May of 2023. Last year, I had the opportunity to be the 9th grade ELA teacher at W.E.B. Dubois Academy. I had an impactful and culture enriching experience while working with the students and staff alike; however, I couldn’t pass the invitation to join the Brown family.Â
This will be my 5th year teaching in JCPS and I am ecstatic about the possibilities here at Brown. I was a student teacher at the Brown School in the fall of 2019 with Neysa Jones. My time working with the students, my wonderful mentor, and the staff throughout the building left a lasting impression on me and I knew I would be back some day.Â
When I am not in the classroom you can find me reading, crafting, singing, or hanging out with my cat. I cannot wait to start working with everyone and look forward to the journey ahead for the 24-25 school year!
Hello Brown Family! My name is Cheri Graf and I am one of the new Kindergarten teachers here at Brown. I am joining the staff with 23 years teaching experience in Jefferson and Oldham counties. While I have briefly taught grades 1 and 2, the majority of my experience has been in Kindergarten. I have taught at Eisenhower Elementary in the early 90s, Buckner Elementary in Oldham County after a break to raise my children, and Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary for the past 6 years..
I am a JCPS graduate with undergraduate teacher training from Western Kentucky University and a Master’s degree in reading from the University of Louisville. I received my National Board Certification in Early Literacy in 2017.Â
My husband, Jeff, and I have raised 4 daughters together, Courtney, Nicole, Natalie, and Claire, and are almost empty nesters. In my spare time, I enjoy being with my family, reading, going to the lake, and anything related to Disney. I am so excited to be a part of the Brown School and can not wait to get to know all my new students and families!
Hello! My name is Hank Dotsey, and I am thrilled to join the Brown School staff as your seventh grade ELA teacher. Before teaching eighth grade ELA at Meyzeek Middle School, I graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in Middle and Secondary Education (Go Cards!), where I learned of the importance of student voice and choice.Â
During my time at UofL, I completed my student teaching at the Brown School, and I was immediately attracted to the sense of community, progression, and valued learning that informs the culture within this building. In my instruction, I strive to emphasize the relevance of students' learning, and I hope to not only foster the growth of my students' literacy, but to also bolster their sense of empathy, communication, and self-reflection both within and beyond the classroom.
In my free time, I enjoy playing and listening to music, exploring local restaurants, watching movies and TV shows, and, of course, reading and writing. I cannot wait to form meaningful connections with the students and faculty of the Brown community—let's make this a great year!
Please let me know if you need anything else from me in the meantime! Thank you for everything!
Hi! I am Jennifer Kyser but you can call me Jenna! I am extremely excited to join the Brown School family as one of the new Kindergarten teachers. I recently finished my 28th year of teaching having spent the last 19 years at Carter. Most of my career has been spent in Kindergarten and ECE. I love teaching little people and I am looking forward to meeting this new bunch.
I am a product of JCPS having graduated from Male in 1990. I have a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Georgetown College, a fifth-year graduate certification in Special Education from UK, and Masters of Education in Special Education from U of L.Â
When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family. My husband, Doug, and I will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary in December and are the proud parents of four children. Our sons, Sam and David, have flown the nest and are both in careers involving children with special needs. Our daughters, Ava and Grace, are in their teens and keep us on our toes. I also love reading and doing crafty things.
I am excited and thankful to join the Brown School Family.
I’ve been building coalitions of students, teachers, and community partners since I began teaching in 2007. I believe schools are a microcosm of society where we learn to work, grow, think, fail, succeed, and become who we are — together. I believe students learn and grow most when the material is relevant and meaningful to them, and that when we follow this kind of model in education, students are passionate about the work they’re engaged in and closer to defining their purpose.Â
I graduated from Bellarmine in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts. I completed three different graduate programs at the University of Louisville, earning my Education Specialist (Ed. S) degree in 2017. I’ve been fortunate to win a few awards, some of them being the 2020 Kentucky High School Teacher of the Year and the 2021 Funds for the Arts Equity Award Winner. I teach Deeper Learning graduate classes at Spalding University, and I’m part of the PBL Works National Faculty. I’ve coached multiple Aspen Challenge Teams, including the winning team in 2020. I’ve empowered students to present at High Tech High in San Diego, California, to legislators and business leaders from across the country in Washington D.C., and a plethora of stages in between from the Kentucky Center for the Arts, to Actors Theatre, to our state’s Capitol Building, to JusticeFest hosted by the Kentucky Derby Festival, and a wide array of communities where my students have moved the hearts and minds of audiences to stand to their feet and support their missions. Â
I am a co-founder of Justice Now: an intergenerational, intersectional, and interdisciplinary movement in JCPS whose mission is to empower students to be the change as they make Louisville their classroom and justice their curriculum.   Â
At Brown I will be working with students in Freshman English, AP Seminar, and our Journalism program. And I can’t wait to co-create the shared space and journey of our classroom together.
Outside of work, I am often having adventures with my wife, our 2 daughters, and our dog. Â
