Dear Brown School Family,
Today, our high school students are engaged in CERT testing. The College Equipped Readiness Tool (CERT) is an assessment designed to evaluate student readiness for college and career pathways. It provides a comprehensive analysis of a student's strengths and areas for improvement, offering invaluable insights that go beyond traditional grading systems. CERT testing is crucial as it aligns closely with college and career standards, ensuring that students are on the right track for their future endeavors. By identifying specific academic needs, CERT helps educators tailor their instruction to better meet the individual needs of each student.
CERT testing plays a pivotal role in enhancing the learning experience by providing detailed feedback on student performance in various subject areas. This enables teachers to adjust their teaching strategies to address gaps and reinforce strengths, ensuring that the curriculum is effectively aligned with student needs. Moreover, the insights gained from CERT testing allow for a more personalized learning approach, helping students to achieve their full potential by focusing on areas that need improvement while also recognizing their achievements.
CERT testing is instrumental in preparing students for the next steps in their educational and professional journeys. The test results offer a clear picture of a student's readiness for college-level coursework and career-related skills, providing a roadmap for future success. By identifying areas where students may need additional support or enrichment, CERT helps to ensure that they are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, whether in higher education or the workforce.
Once the CERT test results are in, it’s important for parents and students to understand how to interpret the data. The results offer detailed insights into various academic areas, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement. Use this data to set realistic goals and create a targeted action plan. Work with your child's teachers to develop strategies that address any identified gaps and build on existing strengths. By using the data effectively, you can help your child make significant strides in their academic journey. Our students will take the CERT test two more times this school year!
Love,
Dr. Angela
LMPD has asked we remind parents that parking in a lane that faces oncoming traffic is against the law.Â
The suggested route is turning right from Second Street onto Chestnut. If you drive so that the YMCA is on your left, turn left in the turning lane on Chestnut, pass the alley, turn right on First Street, then turn right on Broadway. This will then let you turn right on Second Street, putting you into the flow of traffic parents are using to turn onto Chestnut. This also allows the traffic pattern in the area to be minimally disrupted.Â
There are only 14 more days until Literacy Night! Please help us by filling out this RSVP FORM today. (We only need one form completed per K-5 family.)
Our yearbook currently has a special price of $40 - for two weeks only - through Sept. 8th. Order HERE.
Recognition ads (AKA Baby ads) are on sale now at Josten's for families of 5th, 8th and 12th graders. Purchase yours today and create a lifetime memory of this milestone year in your child's life. Save the Date! Tuesday, Sept. 3rd, will be our first picture day of the school year. Just so you know, this is the day after Labor Day. Make-ups will be on Friday, Sept. 27th. Your child's teacher will have the schedule soon.Â
Seniors will also need to have their picture taken, but they can submit a personalized yearbook photo for inclusion before December 13th.Â
NEW UPDATE: Please remind your child not to wear green on Picture Day due to using a Green Screen.
Seniors have the OPTION of having their portrait made with the traditional tux and drape - but are not required to. Ladies may want to wear a special necklace like pearls and gentlemen should wear a plain white T to not be visible under the shirt. If this does not apply to their family values students can be photographed in plain clothes - but to not wear green.Â
Our beloved photographer, Martha Work, retired last year, so we will have a new team from Jostens take photos. We could use a few additional parent volunteers to make this day successful. Please get in touch with Norah Wakefield if you can help out on Picture Day.Â
Thanks!

Boys Soccer-  Our boys have started out strong, but the past 2 games have been against two top 5 teams in the Statec. They showed a lot of toughness and kept the games close, so we are really proud of them. They will have a few days to practice, before taking on Seneca at LouCity Fields on Tuesday at 8:00pm.
Volleyball- is having the best start to a season that we have had in recent memory. Picking up wins over Western, Moore, Francis Parker and Walden. This is a really fun team to watch, so come cheer them on tonight (8/29) at Waggener, or next Tuesday at home vs Collegiate. Â
Cross Country- Has had some really good practices and meets lately, and are working extremely hard to improve. We feel that this will be a great season. There next meet is on Saturday 9/7 at the Rumble in the Jungle meet. If any student is looking to join cross country, email Coach Jennifer O'Brien at jennifer.obrien2@jefferson.kyschools.us
Golf- The boys defeated defeated Highland Latin School on Monday at Owl Creek CC by a score of 180 - 189. Cade and Ethan led the way with scores of 41 and 42 respectively. The match on Wednesday 8/29 is canceled, due to extreme heat.

If anyone was interested in being in High School Band but can't fit it into their schedule, please email me (robert.bernardi2@jefferson.kyschools.us) so I can tell you about an opportunity to join after school band. This will mainly be open to students who know how to play an instrument already but had to quit, however, it could also work for students who have never been in band before.

Does your student need tutoring? Â
I just wanted to remind parents/guardians of the mental health services that are available to your students.Â
1. We have a quiet space in the Student Support Center. This area is available to all students who need a break to re-center themselves or calm down. All they need to do is ask their teacher to use the space, and they will have up to 15 minutes before needing to speak to a SST member.Â
2. Any member of the SST is able to refer your student or a family member for mental health services in the community through JCPS's partnership with Care Solace. If you would like external mental health services please reach out to me or your counselor to make a referall and walk you through the process.
3. Individual and Group services are available from me throughout the school year. I am able to meet with all students with parent/guardian permission. Typically I meet with students once a week for up to 30 minutes at a time (this can vary depending on need). If you are interested in my services please reach out to me via my email and I can send you a permission form to get services started.
4. If there are any other mental health concerns, or material/educational concerns that you feel we could help with please fill out a support form, and one of us will reach out to you within 3 school days.
Last week on Friday students were delivered the state required Suicide Prevention Information which helps students recognize warning signs in themselves and others. I have been calling kids in to check on them if they requested to speak with a counselor this past Friday and into this week. I am so impressed with their openness to discuss mental health and their empathy towards others.Â
I have been so impressed with how well our middle schoolers have performed on MAP this week, both academically and social/emotionally! Thank you for encouraging them. It's making a difference I promise:)
Next week in classrooms students will be discussing bullying and advocacy. This is such an important topic, especially in the middle school where bullying can become more prominent. And with Advocacy being one of our 4 pillars, this topic is huge for our student. Pleas talk to your student about their experience around bullying and advocacy and encourage them to connect with me if they have any concerns.
Please remember to RSVP for our first Coffee with the Counselor on September 11th. This one will be all about College access for 6th-12th grade parents.
What an exciting time of year - Back to School! It's so awesome to see all of my students again and some new faces to the Brown School. The Back to School Bash was a huge success and provided students and families the opportunity to mingle and get to know each other better. Check out my Back to School slidedeck to stay on top of upcoming events in the elementary school world.
