💛 April 24 | Issue #32 💛
Dear Brown School Family,
I have been completely blown away by the preparation and poise of our 5th and 8th graders the past two weeks as they present their academic defenses. After effectively communicating their presentation, each student responds to probing questions, revealing their ability to think analytically and make connections. These defenses are a testament to the knowledge and character of our students. Congratulations to all on achieving this significant milestone!
Love,
Dr. Angela
Tomorrow Friday April 25th and Saturday April 26th will be the drama department’s spring show “Alice in Wonderland” at 6pm in the auditorium. Doors will open at 5:30pm. Thank you for all of your support and for supporting our drama students!

SBDM Nominations Sought
In Kentucky, each school has a School Based Decision Making (SBDM) council composed of the principal, elected teachers, and elected parents. The council oversees many of the most important decisions about how the school operates and supports student achievement. The council is a wonderful chance to learn about our school, work closely with teachers, and help make our school even more successful than it is now. Parents elect the two parent members of the council who will represent them in the decision-making process. If you are interested in running for a position on the Council, please complete this form. Nominations will close at 3:00 pm on May 1st. Elections will be held electronically next week. For additional information, please review the SBDM Council website. If you have any additional questions, please email Dr. Shawna Stenton.Â
Help Needed for 5th and 8th Grade Promotions
At Brown School, it’s a beloved tradition for our lower grade families to provide a special breakfast for 5th and 8th grade students and their families as they transition to middle and high school.
This year, to simplify the process, the PTSA will take the lead on collecting donations, setting up, and serving at both events. We’ll be providing biscuits and gravy and are kindly asking for additional breakfast food donations to complete the menu.
Donations may be dropped off beginning May 20. Please clearly label all items for the PTSA. If your donation requires refrigeration, notify the front office when you drop it off.
We also welcome volunteers to help with set-up, serving, and clean-up. Please sign up here to donate or volunteer.
Prefer to contribute financially? Please click here to donate.Â
Let’s work together to make these milestone moments memorable for our students and families!
Parent Leadership is the Secret Sauce of Brown’s Success
For decades, the J. Graham Brown School has stood out—not just for academic excellence, but for the strength of its parent community. Behind every student thriving and every program running smoothly is a network of dedicated parents who believe that education works best when families and schools work together.
At the heart of this partnership is the PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association)—a cornerstone of our school culture and one of the most important engines behind Brown’s continued success. This isn’t just a group that meets once a month. This is where leadership, vision, and action come to life.
Why the PTSA Matters More Than Ever
After two years of pandemic-related setbacks, our PTSA was left with little more than a name and a hope. Programs had stalled. Momentum was gone. Some even said the PTSA was beyond saving. But we knew better.
In the past few years, we’ve rebuilt from the ground up—restoring trust, raising capital, and reigniting the spirit that makes Brown different. We’ve upgraded the school playground. We reimagined the Fall Festival into a vibrant street fair with food trucks. We’re rebuilding not just programs, but relationships—and we’re just getting started!
Get Involved: Help Shape Next Year’s PTSA at Brown!Â
Are you looking for a more active way to support the Brown School community? The PTSA is currently seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help make next year smoother and more successful for students, families, and staff. Opportunities are available for both board member roles and chair positions—each offering a unique way to make an impact.
What’s the difference between a Board Member and a Chair?
Board Members are voting members who are required to attend monthly PTSA meetings to ensure quorum and participate in key decisions. Chair positions, while not required to attend board meetings, are always welcome and play an important role in specific program areas. Chairs work closely with the board’s Vice Presidents and help implement activities within their assigned area.
Open Board Positions:
We are currently looking to fill two Vice President roles:
Vice President of Membership
This board member will lead the membership campaign, including its design, promotion, and reporting membership numbers to the board.
Vice President of Programs
This individual oversees PTSA programming and program chairs, ensuring smooth planning and execution throughout the year.
Open Chair Positions:
Program Support:
Reflections Chair – Oversees the Reflections Art Program. Most responsibilities take place at the beginning of the school year and conclude by December.
Coffee with Counselors Chair – Coordinates refreshments for counselor-family meetings and serves as the liaison with Ms. Cordia.
Thanksgiving Lunch Chair – Plans and coordinates volunteers and desserts for this annual community event.
Lunch Events Chair – Assists with setup, hosting, and cleanup for several short lunchtime events throughout the year.
Teacher Appreciation Week Chair – Leads the planning of a weeklong celebration for teachers and staff, including theme selection and family/student engagement.
Fundraising Support:
Merchandise Chair – Manages spirit wear and develops ideas for new designs.
Fall Festival Chair – Organizes one of our largest community events, with support from a volunteer committee.
Move-A-Thon Chair – Oversees theme development, t-shirt design, web setup, and event logistics.
Additional Support Roles:
Communications Chair – Help manage social media platforms. Looking for a Facebook Chair? Let us know!
Treasurer Chair – Assists the PTSA Treasurer with financial tracking and documentation.
Grant Chair – Promotes teacher grant opportunities, assists with applications, and helps track fall grant disbursements.
Whether you are interested in serving on the board or contributing to a specific event or program, your time and talents are needed and appreciated. Join us in shaping a vibrant and supportive school year ahead!

Move-A-Thon Raises Over $8,000 Toward Campus ImprovementsÂ
The James Graham Brown School community enjoyed beautiful weather and a fantastic turnout at Friday’s Move-A-Thon. Students raised an impressive $8,013, reaching 80% of the fundraising goal. Thanks to their efforts, the Atrium floor is scheduled for updates approximately two weeks after the school year ends.
Special congratulations to our top three individual fundraisers, who were awarded trophies for their outstanding contributions:
1st Place – Logan Cecil, who raised $1,020
2nd Place – Isaiah Garcia, who raised $850
3rd Place – Olivia Williams, who raised $585
A round of applause goes to the 3rd grade class, which raised a remarkable $3,273 and earned a celebratory pizza party before the end of the school year.
In each grade level, the top student fundraiser earned the chance to “pie” an administrator or teacher (with permission). Congratulations to the following students for leading their grades:
Griffin Bowman (K), Arthur Braun (1st), Adaleigh Johnson (2nd), Logan Cecil (3rd), Isaiah Garcia (4th), Eleanor Valentine (5th), Annalise Mitchell (6th), Ringo Jarrell (7th), Addison Cabanban (8th), Warren Reynolds (9th), and Elijah Borders (11th).
Thank you to every student, family member, and community supporter who contributed to the Move-A-Thon. In addition to the Atrium floor, other campus updates are planned thanks to the generosity of donors.
A heartfelt thank you to the volunteers who helped make the day a success: Grand Master Khalid, Corolina Johnson, Karen Garcia, Omer Mohammed, Jennifer Pardon, Martha Martin, Christa Hanson, Autumn Neagle, and William Mansfield. If we missed any volunteer - we apoligize.  Every volunteer's time and support are deeply appreciated!
