💛 August 21 | Issue #6 💛
Dear Brown School Family,
Over the past two years, we have made a substantial investment in upgrading our cafeteria furniture. Our previous furniture was received second hand from other district elementary schools, and at the time (9 years ago) was an upgrade! Not only was it mismatched and somewhat damaged, the sizing for it was for smaller students (think grades K-2), which made it a bit uncomfortable for older students and adults.
Now our cafeteria is a space of pride for our students. Students love sitting at the cafe height tables and stools where they can get some sunlight by the windows. The new round tables are very popular as the students are able to converse with more friends during meals. We also use this area for Study Skills classes for our high school students, which gives them the opportunity to spread out or work collaboratively.
With that being said, we look forward to you stopping in and having lunch with your student! If you plan on coming, be sure to bring your state issued ID so that we can get you checked in at the Welcome Center.
I hope to see our elementary families this Friday at our Back to School Bash! Remember, your $10 ticket pays for both the adult and the student. Additional tickets are $5 per person.
Love,
Dr. Angela
Please fill out this FORM to RSVP. We only need one form completed per K-5 family. Thanks!Â
Last year our SBDM Council passed an updated Wellness Policy that aligns to JCPS policy regarding food in schools. Food may be sent in to celebrate elementary birthdays, but may not be sent in for grades 6-12. Only healthy snacks and beverages will be provided to students that meet Smart Snack in School Standards (7CFR210.11), according to the Smart Snack Calculator. Cupcakes, cookies, candy, and doughnuts do not meet the guidelines, and we are unable to serve these to students. These items will be held in the office for the family to pick up.Â
Some examples of food items that may be sent in for classroom celebrations include individual bags of Goldfish crackers, packaged apple slices, fruit snacks, and individual bags of baked potato chips. CLICK HERE for a list of snacks or use the calculator above to see if the snack you wish to send is servable. Also consider sending in cute school supplies such as pencils, erasers, note pads, in lieu of food.
As always, all items must be store-bought and have a label with ingredients and nutrition information. Families must communicate in advance with the classroom teacher to obtain approval and ensure that all classmate allergies are addressed. Please do not send in any items unless you have received approval from your child's teacher.
We appreciate your partnership!
We are in need of some parents willing to volunteer to serve as senior sponsors. They would be in charge of planning and organizing prom as well as planning and coordinating senior activities. Please email Dr. Angela if you are willing to serve!
According to KRS 158.1559, we are required by law to inform all students, parents, and guardians the provisions of KRS 508.078 and potential penalties under KRS 532.060 and 534.030.
If you are the parent or the grandparent of a current Brown School student, please complete THIS VERY SHORT FORM.
We also have a Facebook group for verified alumni. CLICK HERE to join.
Save the Date! Tuesday, Sept. 3rd will be our first picture day of the school year. Note that this is the day after Labor Day. Make-ups will be on Friday, Sept. 27th. Your child's teacher will have the schedule soon.Â
Seniors will also need to have their picture taken, but can submit a personalized yearbook photo for inclusion before Dec. 13th.Â
NEW UPDATE: Please remind your child not to wear green on Picture Day due to the use of a Green Screen.
Our beloved photographer, Martha Work retired last year so we will have a new team from Jostens conducting photos. We could use a few additional parent volunteers to make this day a success. Please contact Norah (norah.wakefield@jefferson.kyschools.us) Wakefield if you can help out on Picture Day.Â
Thanks!
Thank you to our volunteers!
Thank you to all those who came out on July 28 for the very rainy clean-up of our outdoor spaces. We had a great group that worked hard on the courtyard. A special thank you to Rachel Joy for coming back after the clean-up to finish mulching. We are scheduling another day to clean up Peace Park. If you want an email or text to help with this project, please sign up here. Â

On Wednesday, Aug 28th, ALL High School students will participate in a mandated CERT Test. This is similar in format and scoring to the ACT and gives us the opportunity to see where students need support and where they excel. We will also test in the winter and spring so we have opportunities to see their growth.
PLEASE set a reminder to charge all school issued Chromebooks Tuesday evening. Student cannot test on personal devices.
