박지혜 《증발》

‘종말’이라는 단어가 영 낯설지 않은, 가까운 미래조차 불투명해진 요즘이다. 우리는 한치 앞도 예단할 수 없는 불안 속에 아이러니하게도 다른 생명과의 공존, 그리고 다음 세대를 위한 논의에 노력을 아끼지 않고 있다. 마치 아무 것도 감히 사유화하지 않겠다는 단호한 태도가 지성인으로서의 도리인것 처럼 말이다. 남 걱정이 한 바탕 훑고 지나간 자리에 이내 부동산이며 가상화폐, 사업과 투자 이야기가 꽃을 피운다. 대화의 끝물에는 언제나 일을 벌이고야 마는 사람만 남는다. 나머지는…? 누군들 신경이나 쓸까.

세상이 말하는―아름다운 공존의 질서에 부합하는― ‘사라짐’은 사실 도처에 널려 있다. 도망가거나 쫓기듯 떠밀려서 모진 뭇매를 맞고 벼랑 끝에 내몰릴 때까지 잘 보이지 않았을 뿐이다. 이것은 치밀한 계획 하에 준비한 범죄가 아니며 불가사이한 자연 현상은 더더욱 아니다. 애처롭고 미안해서 대면하지 못하는 ‘증발’.

지금 그 이야기를 주섬주섬 꺼내 놓는다.

박지혜는 입체, 설치를 중심으로 활동하는 시각예술가다. 암묵적 합의를 매개로 하는 사회의 질서에 관심을 가지고 작업을 해온 그는 우리가 최선이라고 믿는 가치 기준에 꾸준히 의문을 제기하고 있다. 박지혜는 실패를 줄이는 효율적인 예술 생산을 탐구하며 형식, 규격, 단위로 구분되는 공산품, 디자인, 생활양식을 작품에 차용한다. 2015년에 발간한 예술노동 가이드북 『실전작업요가』를 비롯하여 2018년 소설 『표준의 탄생』까지 길고 짧은 글을 생산하고 있으며, 다양한 매체를 활용하여 작업 영역을 확대하는 중이다. 《영광의 상처를 찾아》(송은아트큐브, 2019), 《평범한 실패》(갤러리조선, 2018) 등의 개인전과 《텍스트, 콘텍스트가 되다》(의정부미술도서관, 2020), 《MINUS HOURS》(우민아트센터, 2019) 등 다수의 기획, 단체전에 참여하였으며, 2019년 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시, 2016년 양주시립미술창작스튜디오 777레지던시에 입주하였다.


Jihye Park, Vanishing

These days, the word “end” no longer feels unfamiliar. Even the near future has grown uncertain. Ironically, within this anxiety—where we cannot foresee what lies ahead—there is an earnest effort to discuss coexistence with other life forms and responsibilities for future generations. It’s as if refusing to privatize anything is now a moral obligation for the intellectually responsible. Yet after a wave of shared concerns passes, what follows are lively discussions of real estate, cryptocurrencies, business, and investment. In the end, only those who actually take action remain. The rest…? Who even notices.

The kind of “disappearance” that aligns with the world’s ideal of a beautiful, harmonious order is everywhere. We just didn’t see it clearly—until it fled, was driven away, and forced to the edge under severe pressure. This is not the result of a meticulously planned crime, nor is it an inexplicable act of nature. It is an “vanishing” too pitiful and too guilt-ridden to confront directly.

Those stories begin to be quietly gathered and told.

Jihye Park is a visual artist who works primarily in sculpture and installation. Interested in the social order mediated by unspoken consensus, she consistently questions the value systems we believe to be best. Park explores efficient modes of artistic production that minimize failure, borrowing forms from mass-produced goods, design, and lifestyle formats—categorized by shape, standard, and unit. In addition to visual work, she has written both long and short-texts, including Let's Practice Work Yaga in 2015 and the fiction Birth of the Standards in 2018. She continues to expand her practice across various media. Park has held solo exhibitions such as To Find the Glory Scars (SongEun ArtCube, 2019) and An Ordinary Failures (Gallery Chosun, 2018), and participated in numerous group exhibitions including Text Becomes Context (Uijeongbu Art Library, 2020) and MINUS HOURS (Wumin Art Center, 2019). She was a resident artist at the MMCA Goyang Residency in 2019 and the Yangju City Art Studio 777 Residency in 2016.
