《환상적인 도시들: 선언문, 도시 만들기, 그리고 미래의 상상》

도시의 미래를 꿈꿀 때, 우리는 무엇을 꿈꾸는가? 아브니 탄돈 비에이라의 발표와 워크숍은 서현석 작가의 2019년 작품 <환상 도시>를 중심으로 20세기와 21세기의 도시에 대한 사변적 탐구를 시도한다. 한국뿐만 아니라 전 세계적으로 도시 공간이 점점 더 논쟁의 대상이 되는 이 시점에서, 미래 도시를 위한 청사진 또는 선언문에 대한 질문은 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 이상화된 도시는 도심 공간을 구획하고, 자원을 배분한다. 그리고 그 안에서 시민들이 생활하고, 이동하고, 상호 교류가 장려되는 방식으로 항상 존재한다. 그러나 이는 사실만큼이나 허구적이고 무엇이라 정의하기 어려우며, 환상적이다. 아브니의 《환상적인 도시들》은 국가의 노력, 도시 이론, 그리고 시민 개입을 통해 작성된 주요 도시 선언문의 예를 통해, 보다 공정한 도시 미래를 위한 계획에 시민 공동의 표현을 가능하게 하는 대화와 논의를 탐색한다.

아브니 탄돈 비에이라
아브니 탄돈 비에이라 박사는 큐레이터이자 연구자, 아키비스트이다. 그녀는 20세기 후반의 독립 문학-예술 생산, 물질의 역사, 그리고 도시 지도학을 연구 주제로 삼고 있으며, 다큐멘터리 실천의 정치, 자기 조직 문화, 공간과 형태의 관계에 관심을 두고 있다. 아브니는 카메룬의 RAW 아카데미(RAW Académie)와 국립현대미술관 연구자 레지던시에 참여했으며, 최근에는 광주 비엔날레 큐레이터 아카데미에 참여하고 있다. 현재 디지털 시위 아카이브인 이페메라 박물관(Museum of Ephemera)과 남아시아 예술 플랫폼 핀드 컬렉티브(Pind Collective)를 운영하고 있다. 아브니는 케임브리지 대학교에서 비평과 문화 박사 학위를, 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 세계 문학 석사 학위를 받았다.

Fantastic Cities: Manifestos, City Making, and Imaginations of the Future

What do we dream of when we dream of an urban future? Taking as an anchor director Seo Hyun-suk’s 2019 film Fantastic City, this presentation and workshop will examine speculative approaches to the urban in the 20th and 21st centuries. At a moment when city space is increasingly contested, in South Korea as in the rest of the world, the question of shared blueprints, or manifestos, for future cities is a weighted one. The ideal city is ever present in the ways that urban space is divided, resources are allocated, citizens are encouraged to live, move, and engage with one another. Equally it is illusory and hard to pin down, as much fiction as fact: fantastical. Considering key examples of urban manifestos produced through State efforts, urban theory, and people’s interventions, this event will serve as a provocation and dialogue, enabling a collective articulation of what a more just plan for an urban future might look like.

Avani Tandon Vieira
Dr. Avani Tandon Vieira (b. 1994) is a curator, researcher, and archivist. Her research considers independent literary-artistic production in the late twentieth century, with a focus on material histories and urban cartography. She is interested in the politics of documentary practice, cultures of self-organizing, and the relationship between space and form. Avani’s work has been recognised by the RAW Académie, Cameroon,  the MMCA Researcher Residency, and, most recently, the Gwangju Biennale Curators’ Academy. She currently runs the digital protest archive Museum of Ephemera and the South Asian art platform, Pind Collective. Avani holds a PhD in Criticism and Culture from the University of Cambridge and a master’s in World Literatures from the University of Oxford.
