《여성괴물, 스크린으로의 회귀》

"메두사의 눈을 마주치면 모두가 돌로 변하듯, 우리의 욕망을 읽으면 괴물적 존재인 여성을 만나게 된다. 육체로부터 비롯된 욕망은 우리의 작업 소재이자 언어로 쓰였다. 《메두사의 웃음: 여성 괴물》은 ‘왜 우리는 자신의 이야기밖에 하지 못할까?’라고 스스로 질문하던 시기에 접한 엘렌 식수(Hélène Cixous)의 <메두사의 웃음>의 문장에서 시작되었다. “여성은 여성 자신을 글로 써야 한다.” “그녀는 ‘말하는’ 것이 아니다. 그녀는 대기 중에 떨리는 자기 몸을 던진다.” 우리는 식수의 말처럼 스크린에 “떨리는 자기 몸을” 던지는 동시대 여성 작가들의 영화를 보여주는 《메두사의 웃음: 여성 괴물》전을 기획하였다." -양석영, 최보윤

창조신화의 관점에서 생명의 기원을 접근하면서 작가는 다음과 같은 방법을 재검토한다. 생명체의 물질은 자연적인 또는 초자연적인 과정을 통해 발전하고 얽힌다. 감독은 중국의 창작 신화 '판구는 하늘과 땅을 가른다’와 “인간을 창조하는 누와”를 통해 이러한 구전된 민속에 내재된 가치를 재검토한다. 

최보윤, <호러> HD, 컬러, 사운드, 13분 15초, 2022
그동안 억압했던 식욕이 거식증과 폭식증으로 돌아왔다. 억압의 원인이 무엇인지 찾아보려고 한다.

아빠의 갑작스러운 죽음과 타협해보기 위해, 감독은 세 번의 영화 만들기를 시도한다.

참여작가

김현수
주로 실험적 형식을 띄는 다큐멘터리 작업을 이어나가고 있다. 사적 기억에 서사를 부여해 영화로 만드는 작업을 한다. 작품으로는 <본>(서울독립영화제 본선경쟁, 대단한 단편영화제 수상), <기억과 상실>(인디포럼)등이 있다. 현재는 연세대학교 커뮤니케이션 대학원에서 영화를 공부하고 있다.

김유진
김유진 작가는 1998년생 서울 출신이며 홍익대학교에서 애니메이션 학사를 수료하였다. <레이아빠해방>, <걸스하트방탄> 연출 및 제작한 바가 있다. 

Shi Tang
중국 출신 작가 탕쉬는 영화와 설치미술 작업을 한다. 그녀의 작품은 주로 젠더와 정체성 그리고 몸에 대한 연구를 다룬다. 

최보윤
서울에서 거주 및 활동하고 있으며 주로 영상, 페인팅, 드로잉 작업을 한다. 개인적인 문제에 대한 호기심으로 출발하여 문제의 원인을 찾는 과정을 작업으로 기록하고있다. CalArts에서 미술을 전공했으며 현재는 연세대학교 커뮤니케이션 대학원에서 영화를 공부하고 있다. 

양석영
LA와 서울에서 무빙 이미지 큐레이터로 활동중이다. CalArts 영화/비디오 학과에서 학사 과정을 수료하였다.

Monstrous Women, Return to the screen

When one confronts the gaze of Medusa, everyone turns to stone. Similarly, delving into our desires will introduce you to the monstrous aspect of women. Desires arising from the physical body have always been the subject of our work and have been used as cinematic language. Hélène Cixous's <The Laugh of the Medusa> came across during a time when we were questioning why we can only tell our own stories. Cixous’s statement, "Woman must write herself," not only influenced our work but also brought other contemporary female directors’ films to our minds. "She doesn't "speak," she throws her trembling body forward." Like Cixous’s words, we want to showcase the short films of female directors who throw their “trembling” bodies onto the screen. This screening includes manifesto readings, short film screenings, and discussions.

About the artist

Hyunsu Kim
Hyunsu Kim mainly works on experimental documentaries. She turns personal memories into films by adding narrative. Her works include <BORN>(selected for Seoul Independent Film Festival and The Great Short Film Festival) and <Memory and Loss>(Indieforum). She is currently an MFA Student at Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication & Arts.

Eugene Kim
Based in Seoul, South Korea, Eugene explores essay films, photos, and music. Through the work, she wants to develop insights that logically interpret the organicities of life that seem destined. In 2022, she obtained a BFA degree from the Department of Film and Animation at Hongik University. 

Tang Shi
Tang Shi, an artist from China, possesses a foundation in film and installation art. Her body of work delves into the intricacies of gender, identity, and cultural narratives, reflecting a fascination with notions of the body, homogeneity, and animism. She graduated from the Film and Video program at California Institute of the Arts.

Boyoon Choi
Boyoon Choi is an artist who works with video, painting, and drawing. She is based in Seoul, South Korea. Boyoon enjoys sharing her personal experiences through her works, such as <How to be an Expressive Artist>, <About Painting>, and <I’m not good at titling my work>. She received her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts and she is currently an MFA Student at Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication & Arts.

Seokyoung Yang
Seokyoung Yang is a curator, poet, and filmmaker dedicated to artistic experimentation. Born and raised in South Korea, she investigates the correlation between anomaly of language, diasporic bodies, and internal loss through moving images and texts. She received her BFA in film and video program at California Institute of the Arts. She currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
