얄루 《Seaweed Adventures》
얄루는 작업 초창기부터 미역으로 대표되는 해조류의 시각적/미적 가능성에 관심을 갖고 비디오 프로젝션 및 몰입형 미디어 아트 작업을 창작해왔다. 얄루의 작품 <Seaweed Adventures>와 동명의 전시에서 과거와 미래, 인간과 비인간의 매개로서의 해조류의 여정을 뒤돌아보는 시간을 제안한다.

작가 소개
얄루는 미디어아트 작가로 프로젝션 맵핑, VR, 미디어 파사드, 애니메이션 등 주로 디지털 기반의 작업들을 선보여왔다. 기술다양성(Technodiversity) 및 미디어아트의 시적 잠재력에 관심을 두고 있으며, 탈식민지적, 탈서구중심적, 탈인간중심적 접근을 시도한다. 광주 국립아시아문화전당, 미국 헤드랜드 아트센터, 일본 후쿠오카 아시아 아트뮤지엄, 캐나다 라 반데 비데오, 캐나다 웨스턴 프론트 소사이어티, 미국 베미스 스튜디오 아트센터, 미국 버몬트 스튜디오 아트센터의 펠로우 쉽 등에 선정된 바 있다. 캐나다 마니프 퀘벡 예술 비엔날레 (Manif d’Art Quebec City Biennale), 벨기에 이미지 퍼시블 비엔날레 (Biennale de L’Image Possible) 등에 참여했으며, 현재 제로원 크리에이터로 활동 중이다.

<Seaweed Adventures>
2019, video mapping on custom screen with sound, virtual reality app, 5min
태평양을 따라 모지코(일본), 벤쿠버(캐나다), 광주(한국)에서의 리서치 레지던시 경험을 기반으로 한 프로젝트다. 여기서 해조류는 미역국에 얽힌 개인적인 기억에서부터 민속문화에 이르기까지 다양한 층위에서 작품을 추동하는 모티브이자 구성요소로서 기능한다.

<Homo Paulinella>
2020, single channel video with sound, 8min
이 프로젝트는 포스트휴먼의 하나의 모델로서 ‘호모 폴리넬라(Homo Paulinella)’를 제안한다. 호모폴리넬라는 호모 사피엔스가 능동적으로 신체 기관 바이오 엔지니어링을 통해 해조류가 되어 물 속에서 광합성을 하며 스스로 에너지를 발생시키며 살아가는 일종의 신인류이다.

Yaloo, Seaweed Adventures

Yaloo has been searching the possibilities of heterogeneous subversion by exploring new media. Since the beginning of her work, the artist has been interested in the visual/aesthetic potential of seaweed and has been creating video projection and immersive media artworks. The exhibition “Seaweed Adventures” looks back on the journey of seaweed as a medium between humans and non-humans, past and future.

Yaloo
Yaloo is a South Korean born visual storyteller working with digital media. Her approach to mundane images and experimental use of new image making technology invites viewers to be immersed in her world while sparking friendly conversations on important matters of our time. She received a BFA & MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago(SAIC) focusing on Film,Video, New Media and Animation. She was the first recipient of Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Fellowship from Video Data Bank(SAIC). She received a Gold Award from AHL Foundation, NY. and a grant from Korea Arts Council and Incheon Foundation of Art and Culture, South Korea recently. She participated in the artist residence programs internationally including Asia Cultural Center (South Korea), Headlands Art Center (USA), Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), La Bande Video (Quebec), Western Front Society (Canada), Bemis Studio Art Center (USA), and Vermont Studio Art Center (USA). Her works have been part of a number of solo/group shows and festivals in the cities such as Chicago, Portland, New York, Quebec City, Malmö, Dresden, Fukuoka, Vancouver, and Seoul. She is currently a fellow creator at Zero1ne established by Hyundai Motors and a lecturer at Kaywon University of Arts and Design in Korea.
