이수진 《폴리포니 클럽: 해저 극장》

《폴리포니 클럽: 해저 극장》는 지난 2024년 한국문화예술위원회-극지연구소 협력으로 참여한 이수진 작가의 북극해 탐사과정에서의 현대과학적, 초자연적 신비에 대한 리서치·탐구 과정이 주요한 동기가 되어 시작되었다. 이는 작가가 천착해 온 '우연과 예측불허의 불협화음'이라는 주제를, 실재와 가상의 간극에서 발생하는 미시적 생명 세계의 진화라는 문제의식으로 확장시킨다.

프로젝트의 중심 개념인 ‘폴리포니(Polyphony)’는 다성악의 구조를 공감각적으로 전유한다. 촉각, 환청, 착시 등 지각의 임계점을 교란하는 환각적 경험을 매개로, 물질과 비물질의 세계를 다성악적 구조로 병치시킨다. 영상, 조각, 퍼포먼스를 아우르는 작가의 복합장르적 실천은, 극지방의 특정 장소나 얼음 속에 잠재하나 감지되지 않는 미세한 존재자들에 주목하게 한다. 이 작업은 나아가 소음, 신호, 파장 같은 비가시적 청각 요소들과 혼종과 공유의 생태계의 관계성을 질문하며, 바다를 거대한 감각의 울림통으로서 재맥락화한다.

본 전시는 shhh에서의 스크리닝과 인천아트플랫폼 C공연장의 전시로 구성된다. 극지에서 과학자들이 수행하는 해양세계의 사변적 레퍼런스, 북극해 생명체의 미세한 사운드를 통해 '초월의 가능성’과 ‘미시적 생명’이 혼재하는 장으로서의 바다에 접근한다. shhh에서는 이를 바탕으로 심해의 새로운 생태계 발견과 동시대 사회의 유동적 관계성을 은유하는 3점의 영상 작품을 선보인다.

작가 소개
이수진은 일상세계의 특정한 경계영역에 나타나는 빛, 기억, 소리 등 보이지 않는 다양한 징후와 감각에 관심을 두고, ‘과거-현재-미래’ 시간성 사이에 흐르는 동시대 유동하는 개념들을 재구성한 조각, 공간, 설치, 퍼포먼스, 나레이션, 그리고 영상 등으로 표현하고 있다. 작가는 자연과 이질적인 공간과 장소에 오랜 시간성이 더해지면서 나타나는 다양한 방식의 중층적인 현상들을 발견하고, 산업사회로 이행되면서 지속적으로 나타나고 있던 ‘대립과 갈등’의 상태를 ‘화해와 치유’의 상황으로 변모시키는 ‘현재를 초월하기 위한 Sci-fi 상상’ 그리고 ‘부활(혹은 재활)하는 원시적 생명력’ 등을 특정 상황에 중첩시켜 무한한 가능성이 양립 가능한 상태로 전환하기 위한 시도들을 하고 있다.

Polyphony Club: The Ocean Floor
Jade Sujin LEE

Polyphony Club: The Ocean Floor stems from Jade Sujin LEE’s 2024 Arctic expedition, undertaken in 2024 through a collaborative program between the Arts Council Korea and the Korea Polar Research Institute. Motivated by encounters with scientific and supernatural phenomena, the project extends her research into the ‘dissonance of coincidence and unpredictability’, exploring the evolution of microscopic life at the threshold between reality and virtuality.

The Polyphony Club series reinterprets polyphony—multi-voiced harmony—through a multisensory perspective. Hallucinatory experiences of touch, auditory illusions, and visual phenomena disrupt perception, layering material and immaterial realms into polyphonic constellations. LEE’s practice spans video, sculpture, and performance, attending to imperceptible micro-entities within polar terrains or ice. Noise, signals, and vibrations are examined in relation to hybrid, shared ecologies, reframing the ocean as a resonant apparatus of sensory perception.

The exhibition unfolds in two parts: a screening at shhh and an installation at Incheon Art Platform, Theater C. The screening presents three video works that intertwine speculative scientific references and microscopic Arctic soundscapes. Through this lens, LEE reinterprets the ocean as a site where the potential for transcendence coexists with the world of microscopic life, metaphorically revealing the fluid interrelations, temporal transitions, and the dissolution of boundaries that define contemporary society.

About the Artist

Jade Sujin LEE explores a range of invisible signs and sensations, including light, memory, and sound, which appear in particular border areas of the everyday world. Based on the imagination, she reconstructs the fluid concepts that flow between the temporality of the ‘past – present – future,’ expressing them through various creative forms that encompass sculpture, spatial work, installation, performance, narration, and video. LEE has discovered the various ways in which nature and disparate spaces and places are layered with time. She overlaps ‘sci-fi imagination to transcend the present,’ and the ‘primitive vitality that revives (or rehabilitates)’—which transform the state of ‘confrontation and conflict’ that has been continuously manifested since the transition to industrial society into a situation of ‘reconciliation and healing’— with specific situations, attempting to make the infinite possibilities compatible with them.
